1885 schleicht sich eine junge Frau bei Anbruch der Dunkelheit heimlich aus dem elterlichen Haus, um in einer nahe gelegenen Grube Ton zu besorgen. Ihr Name ist Camille Claudel, eine 20-jährige ungestüme Bildhauerin mit einem außergewöhnlichen Talent. Sie arbeitet wie besessen. Eines Tages lernt die junge Künstlerin den 24 Jahre älteren Auguste Rodin kennen. Er erkennt ihr unglaubliches Talent, sie wird seine Schülerin und schließlich seine Geliebte. 15 Jahre lang sind die beiden ein Paar und lieben sich leidenschaftlich. Doch die Bewunderung Claudels für Rodin schlägt mehr und mehr um, zunächst in Ärger und schließlich in blanken Hass auf seinen Erfolg und auf seine ständigen Frauengeschichten. Als Rodin sich letztlich weigert, sich scheiden zu lassen, um Camille zu heiraten, erleidet sie einen Zusammenbruch. Sie zieht sich mehr und mehr zurück, um in der Isolation ihre Gefühle in ihre Arbeit umzusetzen. Doch die Bedingungen für eine Künstlerin sind am Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts extrem hart. So zerbricht Camille Claudel schließlich, von ihrer Familie und insbesondere ihrem geliebten Bruder, dem Schriftsteller Paul Claudel, allein gelassen und verraten. Sie wird in eine Nervenheilanstalt eingewiesen, in der sie unter menschenunwürdigen Bedingungen die letzen 30 Jahre ihres Lebens fristet. Alle Versuche Camille Claudels, ihre Familie dazu zu bringen, sie von dieser Folter zu erlösen, bleiben ungehört. Einsam und allein stirbt sie in der Nervenheilanstalt in Südfrankreich
