The captain asks for a show of hands : poems by Nick Flynn( Book )

4 editions published between 2011 and 2013 in English and held by 472 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"What begins as a meditation on love and the body soon breaks down into a collage of voices culled from media reports, childhood memories, testimonies from Abu Ghraib detainees, passages from documentary films, overheard conversations, and scraps of poems and song, only to reassemble with a gathering sonic force. It's as if all the noise that fills our days were a storm, yet at the center is a quiet place, but to get there you must first pass through the storm, with eyes wide open, singing. Each poem becomes a hallucinatory, shifting experience, through jump cut, lyric persuasion, and deadpan utterance."--Jacket
Some ether by Nick Flynn( Book )

3 editions published between 2000 and 2005 in English and Dutch and held by 436 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Winner of a "Discovery"/The Nation Award Winner of the 1999 PEN/Joyce Osterweil Award for Poetry Some Ether is one of the more remarkable debut collections of poetry to appear in America in recent memory. As Mark Doty has noted, "these poems are more than testimony; in lyrics of ringing clarity and strange precision, Flynn conjures a will to survive, the buoyant motion toward love which is sometimes all that saves us. Some Ether resonates in the imagination long after the final poem; this is a startling, moving debut."

Darwin's nightmare by Hubert Sauper( Visual )

3 editions published between 2004 and 2006 in English and held by 248 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Alice invents a little game and Alice always wins by Nick Flynn( Book )

3 editions published between 2008 and 2013 in English and held by 145 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"In this first play from the award-winning memoirist and poet Nick Flynn, four strangers meet on a New York City sidewalk during a blackout. Gideon finds himself locked out of his apartment, stranded on the street with nothing but a television and the company of three individuals, each mysterious in his or her own way: the specter-like Alice, ringleader of the neighborhood; Esra, a fifteen-year-old girl whose mother is M.I.A. - again; and Ivan, a marooned businessman trying to make his way home. As Gideon makes futilely attempts to break into an apartment that may or may not be his, an unsettling connection between Ivan and Esra develops while Alice and Gideon look on helplessly. Unable to make sense of their predicament, let alone alter it, the four float aimlessly in and out of seeming reality only to find themselves even more lost when the electricity finally comes back on." "Once again exploring the tenuous membrane that separates comfortable everyday existence from the desperate margins of society, Flynn portrays an urban dystopia unnervingly similar to our own world while poignantly tapping into the loneliness and peril of city life."--Jacket

The Funk & Wag from A to Z by Mel Chin( Book )

2 editions published in 2014 in English and held by 128 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This striking, oversized book, designed to evoke encyclopaedias, is a highly creative amalgam of collage with a political bent and poetry. From 2011 to 2012, American artist Mel Chin (b. 1951) extracted all of the images from a twenty-five-volume set of Funk & Wagnall's 'Universal Standard Encyclopedia' (ca. 1953-56) and began visually re-editing. Thousands of images rendered by photomechanical reproduction that served a populist, mid-century encyclopaedia are reconfigured with 21st-century hindsight and idiosyncratic connections that convey social and artistic commentaries. Surrealism, humour, sarcasm, politics, history and beauty permeate these sometimes raucous, often confounding, but consistently stunning images. Over 500 black-and-white collages are accompanied by twenty-five poems, one per encyclopaedia volume, commissioned by Chin and author Nick Flynn specifically for this publication. Writers range from the well-known to the surprising. This book offers mischievous fun with pointed commentary and hilarity
