The church was constructed in the 160s under the guidance of Reverend Wendell McFall. His sermons declared the existence of God's second son - whose mission it is to undo all of Jesus' work on EArth. McFall had the church painted red to summon the first son to defeat the second. But when he sacrificed a child to support his rantings, his congregation hung him from the rafters of his own sanctuary ... For twenty years, the red church as stood empty. Crumbling to ruin, it has become a site for Halloween pranks and the setting for ghost stories - including one about the thing that lives in the bell tower, a creature being blamed for a brutal murder that occurred in the church's graveyard

When Freeman Mills, a 12-year-old boy with the power to read minds and an endearing affinity for Clint Eastwood movies, arrives at the former mental institution known as Wendover Home in the Southern Appalachian mountains, he vows to tolerate the facility's psychological treatments and religious rhetoric, but refuses to make friends or reveal his ESP. He soon finds out, however, that no one keeps secrets within the aging walls of Wendover-despite the best efforts of its administrators, doctors and counselors, many of whom are involved in conducting risky shock-therapy experiments on the children. When the research goes awry, Wendover and its inhabitants get caught between the real world and the "deadscape"--A parallel universe in which long-buried ghosts from the mental institution haunt the living. --Pub. The manor by Scott Nicholson( Book )

1 edition published in 2004 in English and held by 81 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Ephram Korban was an admirer of the human creative spirit, dedicated to collecting art in its many forms - literature, photography, painting, and sculpture - before he took his own life. Nestled in the heart of the Appalachian Mountains stands the home he built as a retreat for artists to hone their craft, perfect their skills ... perhaps even produce a masterpiece. Isolated from the outside world in the electricity-free mansion, artists gather to court their muses for six weeks, undisturbed. Anna Galloway has no interest in art and even less in the people who produce it. Her sensibilities are more in tune with the realm beyond the physical, where the souls of the deceased reside and visions reveal secrets. She has included herself among the elite artistes in residence at Korban's retreat because she has seen the manor in her dreams - and believes Korban's ghost may be wandering its halls

Julia Stone will remember, even if it kills her. Dr. Pamela Forrest is determined to bring Julia's memories to the surface, hoping to heal Julia's panic disorder. The therapist keeps returning Julia to a night twenty-three years ago when Julia was four. A night of hooded figures, strange chants, pain, and blood. The night her father disappeared from the face of the earth. Julia rebuilds the past a piece at a time during the mind-wrenching therapy sessions. But the line between the past and the present begins to blur. Julia finds a silver skull ring that bears the name "Judas Stone." The same ring had been worn by one of the hooded figures who scarred her both mentally and physically on that long-ago night. Someone is leaving strange messages inside her house, even though the door is locked. The religious handyman, who has a key, spends a lot of time in the woods behind her house. Her boyfriend Mitchell becomes distant and violent. And the cop who investigated her father's disappearance has followed her to the small Appalachian town of Elkwood. Now she has a head full of memories, but she doesn't know which are real and which are the creations of Dr. Forrest. The shadows of Julia's panic are growing larger and darker. But succumbing to madness seems safer than heeding the whispers of the master who claims ownership of her body and soul
