Gillian Wearing by Gillian Wearing( Book )

12 editions published in 2012 in German and English and held by 240 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

British artist Gillian Wearing explores the lives of ordinary people through her photographs and films, often masking her subjects and using staging techniques to challenge the public and private identities of her individuals. This monograph provides an overview of the artist's work from the early, iconic photographs of people holding up signs with written personal confessions or thoughts, titled 'Signs that Say What You Want Them to Say and Not Signs that Say What Someone Else Wants You to Say' (1992 - 93), to her latest video 'Bully' (2010) in which the roles of victims and perpetrators, actors and directors are blurred. 0Exhibition: Whitechapel Gallery, London, UK / K20 Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen, Düsseldorf, Germany / Pinakothek der Moderne, Munich, Germany

2 editions published in 2012 in English and held by 189 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Hear the name Andy Warhol and what comes most immediately to mind are iconic images of Campbell's soup cans, the Velvet Underground's ubiquitous banana cover art and quirky colour-adjusted panels of popular cultural icons. But Warhol was also a skilled draftsman, who filled numerous sketchbooks with freehand drawings of still-life objects and friends. 'From Silver Point to Silver Screen' collects more than 100 of these early drawings, dating from as far back as the 1950s

Women : Picasso, Beckmann, de Kooning : Bayerische Staatsgemäldesammlungen( Book )

3 editions published in 2012 in English and held by 186 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Regardless of the clichés associated with Pablo Picasso (1881-1973), Max Beckmann (1884-1950), and Willem de Kooning (1904-1997) in the "public" private sphere, their exploration of the theme "woman" go far beyond one-sided definitions. Their portrayals of women are highly nuanced; they have a significance of their own and time and again become sensitive reflections of social and political problems and upheavals. They are not simply surfaces upon which are projected male longings and desires, but catalysts for a confrontation with the artist's own life and history (Picasso), while in Beckmann's work they are completely free, independent counter-images. De Kooning sees them as a separate force within which culminate opportunities for artistic expression. Contributions by art historians, authors, sociologists, and artists approach the theme from a variety of perspectives. Exhibition: Pinakothek der Moderne, Munich, Germany (30.3.-15.6.2012)
P.P.P., Pier Paolo Pasolini : Pier Paolo Pasolini and death by Pier Paolo Pasolini( Book )

11 editions published in 2005 in German and English and held by 163 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Nature as artifice : new Dutch landscape in photography and video art by Maartje van den Heuvel( Book )

4 editions published in 2008 in English and held by 147 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"In the eyes of the world, the image of the Dutch landscape has boon shape-id by the history of painting. Internationally acclaimed artists like Brueghel and Ruisdael, and later Van Gogh and the early Mondrian created an image of a picturesque rural idyll that look root in the popular imagination. This is still the image of the Netherlands in mass-media and tourism." "Nature as Artifice shows a new and different approach in photography and video art to the landscape of the Netherlands. The eighteen artists presented here in effect replace that painterly vision with an up-front and sometimes confronting image of the Netherlands as the most artificial country in the world. Under the now familiar pressures of urbanization, globalization and the restructuring of the economy, as well as the need to keep the water at bay, the Dutch have extended the human control from the landscape to nature as a whole. This industrialized, urbanized, man-controlled and artificial landscape is the point of departure for the photographers and video artists whose work is shown in this book. They do not judge, but rather observe, analyze and register, and search for new beauty in their changed surroundings."--Jacket

Lina Bo Bardi 100 : Brazil's alternative path to modernism by Lina Bo Bardi( Book )

4 editions published in 2014 in English and German and held by 128 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The Italian-Brazilian architect and designer Lina Bo Bardi (1914-92) forged a unique path with her bold, modern designs. Spanning architecture, stage design, fashion and furniture, her work drew inspiration from the International Style, which she translated into her own visual language. Fundamental to her work was her thoughtful engagement with her adopted country of Brazil-its culture, society, politics and indigenous design traditions-and her ideas about the social possibilities of design, and she expressed her sometimes radical views in her design work, exhibitions and writings. Published on the occasion of Lina Bo Bardi's hundredth birthday, this richly illustrated volume presents an overview of her oeuvre and highlights her iconic buildings: her home, the so-called Casa de Vidro, the Museo de Arte de São Paulo and the cultural center SESC Pompéia
