Physicist Freeman Dyson discusses Project Orion, a failed plan to build a large manned spaceship propelled by a large number of nuclear bombs for interplanetary exploration. Begun in 1958 as a technically superior alternative to chemical rockets, the intention was to land on Mars by 1965. Dyson discusses how Ted Taylor, a bomb designer at Los Alamos, came up with the idea for Project Orion; describes what the Orion spaceship would have looked like; lists the three types of nuclear propulsion; and mentions the various scientists involved in the project, including Frederic de Hoffmann, the founder of the General Atomic company that oversaw the Orion Project. Dyson also discusses the need for the large number of bombs used to propel the rocket; design problems; the plan to go to Mars, Jupiter and Saturn; the cost estimates for the project; the different types of bomb delivery systems; the problem of fall-out; the potential for assorted kinds of accidents; a description of the NASA and Air Force versions of Orion; and the reasons why the project was dropped. Dyson then takes questions from the audience
