Snapshot : painters and photography, Bonnard to Vuillard( Book )

15 editions published between 2011 and 2012 in English and held by 611 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The advent of the Kodak camera in 1888 made photography accessible to amateurs as well as to professionals. Artists were not immune to its allure, and many began experimenting with the camera as a means of capturing images as studies for final works and of observing the world and the people in it. Snapshot investigates seven Post-Impressionist painters and printmakers: Pierre Bonnard, George Hendrik Breitner, Maurice Denis, Henri Evenepoel, Henri Rivière, Félix Vallotton, and Edouard Vuillard. Although celebrated for their works on canvas and paper, these artists also made many personal and informal snapshots. Depicting interiors, city streets, nudes, and portraits, these photographs were kept private and never exhibited. As a result, most have never been published. Juxtaposing personal photographs with the related paintings and prints by these Post-Impressionist artists, Snapshot offers a new perspective on early photography and on the synthesis of painting and photography at the end of the 19th century"--
Henri Cartier-Bresson : here and now by Henri Cartier-Bresson( Book )

15 editions published in 2014 in 3 languages and held by 481 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Henri Cartier-Bresson's work embraced art, politics, revolution, and war. But more powerful than any of these overarching themes was his evident concern for the human individual at every social level. This lavishly illustrated monograph - published to accompany France's first major retrospective since the photographer's death in 2004 - traces Cartier-Bresson's development as a photographer, activist, journalist, and artist. In addition to some of Cartier-Bresson's best-known photographs, included here are many seldom seen or unpublished images and some rarities in color as well as black-and-white. From his earliest photographs in Paris in the 1920s and Africa in the 1930s, Cartier-Bresson's capacity to conjure coherence and harmony out of a chaotic world appears effortless and innate - a deep-centered attitude rather than a merely learned technique. His observations of the effects of poverty and revolution around the world led directly to his pioneering photojournalism and to his co-founding of Magnum Photos. He became renowned for his penetrating portraits of the most prominent figures of his time, becoming, in the words of his biographer Pierre Assouline, 'the eye of the century."--Publisher

Magnum manifesto by Clément Chéroux( Book )

9 editions published in 2017 in 3 languages and held by 276 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In this landmark photography publication and accompanying exhibition, Clément Chéroux demonstrates how Magnum Photos owes its pre-eminence to the ability of its photographers to encompass and navigate the points between photography as art object and photography as documentary evidence. A Magnum photograph can be expressive and bear witness at the same time. Magnum Manifesto is organized into three main parts: Part 1 (1947-1968) views the Magnum archive through a humanist lens, focusing on post-war ideals of commonality and utopianism. Part 2 (1969-1989) shows a world fragmenting, with a focus on subcultures, minorities and outsiders. Part 3 (1990-present day) charts the ways in which Magnum photographers have captured - and continue to capture - a world in flux and under threat. Featuring both group and individual projects, the book includes contact sheets, notebooks, magazine spreads and other previously unseen material to accompany the photographs. Complete with extensive texts by Clément Chéroux and photographic historian Clara Bouveresse, Magnum Manifesto is an essential purchase for anyone seeking to understand the very best in photography

Autophoto : cars & photography, 1900 to now( Book )

2 editions published in 2017 in English and held by 123 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Autophoto explores photography's longstanding and generative relationship to the automobile. Since its invention, the automobile has reshaped our landscape, extended our geographic horizons and radically altered our conception of space and time, influencing the practice of photographers worldwide. The book shows how the car provided photographers with new subject matter and a new way of exploring the world. Capturing formal qualities such as the geometric design of roadways or reflections in a rear view mirror, photographers invite us to look at the world of the automobile in a new way. Autophoto also includes other projects, such as a series of car models that cast a fresh eye on the history of automobile design, created specifically for the Fondation Cartier show by French artist Alain Bublex, plus a comparative history of automobile design and photography, essays by scholars and quotes by participating artists."--
