Many of the women who lived in the Franco era share grim stories about their children, children who accompanied their mothers to prison or who were born behind bars. The reporters interviewed both surviving mothers and surviving children. Prison conditions were subhuman. Hundreds of infants died of tuberculosis, meningitis, cold or starvation. But death was not the only way a mother could lose her child. In March 1940, Franco's Ministry of Justice passed an order establishing the separation of children from their mothers after the age of three. Children were sent to institutions created by Franco with the intention of reeducating them to hate the ideas of their parents
