The Great ape project : equality beyond humanity( Book )

19 editions published between 1993 and 2011 in English and held by 778 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Who are the Great Apes? They are chimpanzees, gorillas, orang-utans, and, according to co-editors Paola Cavalieri and Peter Singer, and a distinguished group of international contributors, they are persons. Yes, persons, capable of reflections, emotions, joy, as well as, all too often, pain. On the other hand, as one of this book's contributors, Richard Dawkins, has written, while we admit that we are like apes, "we seldom realize that we are apes."
The animal question : why nonhuman animals deserve human rights by Paola Cavalieri( Book )

28 editions published between 2001 and 2004 in English and held by 654 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This book tackles the controversial question: should human rights be granted to animals? Cavalieri's defence of the rights of nonhuman animals questions the nature, scope and language of contemporary ethics and the legal system
The death of the animal : a dialogue by Paola Cavalieri( Book )

12 editions published in 2009 in English and French and held by 372 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"While moral perfectionists rank conscious beings according to their cognitive abilities, Paola Cavalieri launches a more inclusive defense of all forms of subjectivity. In concert with Peter Singer, J.M. Coetzee, Harlan B. Miller, and other leading animal studies scholars, she expands our understanding of the nonhuman in such a way that the derogatory category of "the animal" becomes meaningless. In so doing, she presents a nonhierachical approach to ethics that better respects the value of the conscious self." "As Peter Singer writes in his foreword, the implications of this conversation extend far beyond the issue of the moral status of animals. They "get to the heart of some important differences about how we should do philosophy, and how philosophy can relate to our everyday life." From the divergences between analytical and continental approaches to the relevance of posthumanist thinking in contemporary ethics, the psychology of speciesism, and the practical consequences of an antiperfectionist stance, The Death of the Animal confronts issues that will concern anyone interested in a serious study of morality."--Jacket

One world : the ethics of globalization by Peter Singer( Book )

2 editions published in 2003 in Italian and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The book encompasses four main global issues: climate change, the role of the World Trade Organization, human rights and humanitarian intervention, and foreign aid. Singer addresses each vital issue from an ethical perspective and offers alternatives to the state-centric approach that characterizes international theory and relations today. On climate change, for example, he sees the ethical issue as one that concerns a common global resource - the capacity of the atmosphere to absorb waste gases. How much of this resource should developed notions appropriate, and how much should be left for developing nations? Regarding the WTO, Singer asks whether the organization allows free trade to override all other values, and he assesses the evidence for and against the view that globalization helps the poor. In his consideration of human rights, the author asks to what extent we can develop global laws protecting human rights and what the criteria for intervention should be when these rights are violated. Finally, Singer addresses the obligations of the world's rich nations to assist the poor nations."--Jacket
