That problems connected with sea travel differ from area to area is abundantly clear. By the same token it is clear that these particular areal, [sic] ecological, and other problems have been solved in various ways by the people who have been faced with their solution. Our special concern is with the solution of problems connected with so-called "sheltered water" sea travel. Deep sea navigation as such imposes far more rigorous prerequisites on design and technique than the other type of navigation. With regard to the degree of difficulty encounted in mastery of the sea and its problems, three main areas in the western and far western Pacific may be discerned
