Principally the papers of Dr. Oswald Theodore Avery, but also includes papers relating to his parents, Joseph Francis Avery and Elizabeth Crowdy Avery. Joseph Francis Avery was a Baptist minister in Halifax, Nova Scotia and New York, N.Y. Correspondence of Dr. O.T. Avery mentions personal and family news as well as his discovery of the properties of DNA and his research on pneumococcal types. There are also letters from his brother, Roy C. Avery, written during service in the U.S. Army Sanitary Corps in France during World War I. Many of the letters congratulate Dr. O.T. Avery on receiving various awards, prizes, and honorary degrees. His military service documents from World War I, photographs, speeches and writings make up the balance of the collection.

Scope and Contents: The papers are an addition to an existing collection of Heidelberger papers, MS C 245. These papers deal primarily with Heidelberger's career as teacher, researcher, and active member of the scientific community. Extensive correspondence, the bulk of which dates from 1956 to 1989, demonstrates Heidelberger's wide range of contacts and interests in the fields of immunochemistry and related disciplines. Some of the holdings illustrate Heidelberger's role as an original researcher and contributor to scientific journals (Series 4, 5, 6, 8). Heidelberger's career as a teacher is also well-documented by this collection. Research notes and bound notebooks kept by students make up a large part of the collection. The notebooks, in particular, represent decades of research work conducted under Heidelberger's supervision. The Heidelberger papers will be of interest to those researching in the evolution of immunochemistry both in the laboratory and without. The collection may also illuminate the growth and structure of the international scientific community in the twentieth-century. The fact that Heidelberger was active in his field for over seventy years makes these papers useful for studies of historical trends and developments. In addition, it is conceivable that historians interested in Columbia, Rutgers and New York University might find the papers of interest as he held faculty positions at all three. Researchers interested in pneumococcal polysaccharides, malaria, and typhoid might also used this collection, particularly for historical background.

Consists of materials collected by Joshua Lederberg over his thirty year professional relationship with Oswald T. Avery. The materials include published articles and books, laboratory notes, correspondence, speeches, official reports, photographs, and audio cassettes. Documents range in date from 1912 to the late 1990s, most coming from the 1940s and from the 1960s to the present. A large part of the collection consists of published materials, and a number of significant items are copies of materials at the Rockefeller Archive Center and the Tennessee State Library and Archives. The collection falls roughly into two parts: items related to the discovery of the transforming principle and items related to the discovery's reception by the scientific community. Particularly noteworthy are 10 sets of notes from the Avery laboratory (1940-46) with captions by Maclyn McCarty and 6 photographs of the Rockefeller Institute Hospital Staff (1923-49/50).
