Patterns of change : linguistic innovations in the development of classical mathematics by
Ladislav Kvasz(
)
18 editions published in 2008 in English and Undetermined and held by 810 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"This book offers a reconstruction of linguistic innovations in the history of mathematics; innovations which changed the ways in which mathematics was clone, understood and philosophically interpreted. It argues that there are at least three ways in which the language of mathematics has been changed throughout its history, thus determining the lines of development that mathematics has followed." "The book offers tools of analysis by means of which scholars and students of the history and philosophy of mathematics can attain better understanding of the various changes, which the subject of their study underwent in the course of history. The book brings also important insights for mathematics education connecting growth of language with the development of mathematical thought."Jacket

The philosophy of mathematics education by
Paul Ernest(
)
8 editions published in 2016 in English and Undetermined and held by 392 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
This survey provides a brief and selective overview of research in the philosophy of mathematics education. It asks what makes up the philosophy of mathematics education, what it means, what questions it asks and answers, and what is its overall importance and use? It provides overviews of critical mathematics education, and the most relevant modern movements in the philosophy of mathematics. A case study is provided of an emerging research tradition in one country. This is the Hermeneutic strand of research in the philosophy of mathematics education in Brazil. This illustrates one orientation towards research inquiry in the philosophy of mathematics education. It is part of a broader practice of 'philosophical archaeology': the uncovering of hidden assumptions and buried ideologies within the concepts and methods of research and practice in mathematics education. An extensive bibliography is also included

Appraising Lakatos : mathematics, methodology, and the man by

Imre Lakatos (19221974) was one of the protagonists in shaping the "new philosophy of science". More than 25 years after his untimely death, it is time for a critical reevaluation of his ideas. His main theme of locating rationality within the scientific process appears even more compelling today, after many historical case studies have revealed the cultural and societal elements within scientific practices. Recently there has been, above all, an increasing interest in Lakatos' philosophy of mathematics, which emphasises heuristics and mathematical practice over logical justification. But suitable modifications of his approach are called for in order to make it applicable to modern axiomatised theories. Pioneering historical research in England and Hungary has unearthed hitherto unknown facts about Lakatos' personal life, his wartime activities and his involvement in the political developments of postwar Europe. From a communist activist committed to Gyrgyi Lukcs' thinking, Lakatos developed into a staunch antiMarxist who found his intellectual background in Popper's critical rationalism. The volume also publishes for the first time a part of his Debrecen Ph. D. thesis and it is concluded by a bibliography of his Hungarian writings

The book offers a reconstruction of linguistic innovations in the history of mathematics. It argues that there are at least three ways in which the language of mathematics can be changed. As illustration of changes of the first kind, called recodings, is the development along the line: synthetic geometry, analytic geometry, fractal geometry, and set theory. In this development the mathematicians changed the very way of constructing geometric figures. As illustration of changes of the second kind, called relativization, is the development of synthetic geometry along the line: Euclid 's geometr
