Il piccolo orfano Oliver Twist è ospite di uno squallido istituto diretto dal perfido mister Bumble fin da quando la madre, morta per le conseguenze del parto, lo ha messo al mondo. Compiuti i nove anni, Oliver è affidato, dietro compenso dell'orfanotrofio, alla famiglia Sowerberry, alla ricerca di un apprendista di bottega. I continui contrasti con Noah Claypole, un altro apprendista, le vessazioni e i violenti disaccordi con i membri della nuova famiglia, lo obbligano a fuggire verso Londra. Qui, appena arrivato, irretito dall'offerta di un posto dove dormire, entra a far parte della banda di ladruncoli organizzati da un uomo senza scrupoli dall'aspetto orripilante, l'oscuro Fagin. Oliver viene arrestato durante un colpo andato male ai danni di mister Brownlow, benché il ruolo del trovatello nel corso del furto sia del tutto marginale. Vista la situazione, Oliver è dapprima scagionato, poi accolto da Brownlow nella sua dimora. Per la prima volta l'orfano è trattato con affetto e rispetto. Qualche tempo dopo, tuttavia, Nancy e il violento Billy Sykes, appartenenti alla banda di Fagin, lo riacciuffano e lo riconducono dal capo proprio quando Oliver ha ricevuto un incarico di fiducia dal signor Brownlow, il quale rimane molto deluso a causa di quella che crede una fuga da parte del ragazzo. Sykes intende utilizzare Oliver per compiere una rapina a casa di Brownlow, ma la rapina fallisce. Il ragazzo rimane ferito ad una spalla e condotto da Fagin, dopo aver rischiato di essere gettato in un fiume da Sykes Temendo per la sorte di Oliver, Nancy avverte il signor Brownlow e per questo è uccisa dallo stesso Sykes, sulle cui tracce si trova ormai la polizia. Il crudele criminale tenta un'ultima disperata fuga sui tetti usando Oliver come ostaggio, ma la sua fuga ha presto termine con un'accidentale impiccagione dovuta ad una disgraziata caduta. Assicurato anche Fagin alla prigione, Oliver può trascorrere finalmente la sua vita nella casa accogliente del signor Brownlow
