The humanitarians : the International Committee of the Red Cross by David P Forsythe( Book )

1 edition published in 2005 in English and held by 16 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) coordinates the world's largest private relief system for conflict situations. This book examines the ICRC from its origins in the middle of the nineteenth century up to the present day, and provides a comprehensive overview of a unique organization, whose governing body remains all-Swiss, but which is recognized in international law and in other legal arrangements as if it were an inter-governmental organization. David Forsythe focuses on the policy making and field work of the ICRC, while not ignoring international humanitarian law. He explores how it exercises its independence, impartiality, and neutrality to try to protect prisoners in Iraq, displaced and starving civilians in Somalia, and families separated by conflict in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict."--Jacket
Commentary on the second Geneva Convention : Convention (II) for the Amelioration of the Condition of Wounded, Sick, and Shipwrecked Members of Armed Forces at Sea by International Committee of the Red Cross( Book )

4 editions published in 2017 in English and held by 16 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The application and interpretation of the four Geneva Conventions of 1949 have developed significantly in the sixty years since the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) first published its Commentaries on these important humanitarian treaties. To promote a better understanding of, and respect for, this body of law, the ICRC commissioned a comprehensive update of its original Commentaries, of which this is the second volume. Its preparation was coordinated by Jean-Marie Henckaerts, ICRC legal adviser and head of the project to update the Commentaries. The Second Convention is a key text of international humanitarian law. It contains the essential rules on the protection of the wounded, sick and shipwrecked at sea, those assigned to their care, and the vessels used for their treatment and evacuation. This article-by-article Commentary takes into account developments in the law and practice to provide up-to-date interpretations of the Convention. The new Commentary has been reviewed by humanitarian-law practitioners and academics from around the world, including naval experts. It is an essential tool for anyone working or studying within this field

Customary international humanitarian law by Jean-Marie Henckaerts( Book )

2 editions published in 2005 in English and held by 8 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In 1996, the International Committee of the Red Cross, alongside a range of renowned experts, embarked upon a major international study into current state practice in international humanitarian law in order to identify customary law in this area. This book is the result of that study, a comprehensive analysis of the customary rules of international humanitarian law applicable in international and non-international armed conflicts. Given that important treaties in this area have not yet been universally ratified, this is a publication of major importance, carried out at the express request of the international community. In so doing, this study identifies the common core of international humanitarian law binding on all parties to all armed conflicts
