RHEA (reentry heating energies analyzer) by Elmer G Johnson ( Book )
1 edition published in 1974 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide
At the present time, duplication of reentry environments in ground test facilities cannot be satisfactorily accomplished. Major deficiencies in such facilities are: too short test times, gases not representative of the atmosphere because of residual dissociation and ionization of air molecules, and stagnation pressure and enthalpy not representative of those produced through dynamics of the flight vehicle. Many new concepts and attempts to circumvent these limitations have been studied over the past few years. The RHEA process is a novel mechanic approach to solving the problem of duplicating high speed environments in ground testing facilities. This report reviews highlights of the concept and research results on key problems which have been under investigation by a number of research groups for the past year. (Modified author abstract)
Interface Stability between Two Gas Streams of Different Density in a Curved Flow ( Book )
1 edition published in 1988 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide
More severe temperature conditions require novel cooling methods for small turbines. A concept applicable to small turbines is described. It involves co-flowing streams within the turbine blade passage: one cold and one hot. This concept, referred to as the Radiax Turbine, provides for strong blade cooling even in very small turbines where traditional cooling approaches cannot be used. However, fundamental studies of turbulent flow in curved channels of two streams of different total pressure and temperature are required to provide the basic information needed in understanding this co-flowing streams in a curved channel. This report covers the design of an experimental apparatus that will be used for investigating the interface stability between two gas streams of different densities in a curved flow and reports on flow visualization studies performed with the apparatus. Several types of instability are possible in these curved mixing layers and they are discussed in the report. (JHD)

CASCADE CHARACTERISTIC NUMBERS FOR TWO-DIMENSIONAL COMPRESSIBLE FLOW ( )
1 edition published in 1952 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide
A theoretical determination of relationships between cascade variables and parameters and the pressure rise, flow deflection, and losses through the cascade was made to obtain basic information useful in turbomachinery design. Isentropic uniform flow upstream of the cascade was assumed, and tunnel-wall interference was neglected in definitions of cascade characteristic numbers. The relationships between cascade flow coefficients and (1) the obtainable pressure ratio and (2) the efficiency of a compressor element were determined under the assumption that uniform and stationary flow existed at the entrance to the blade rows. Test evaluation methods for determining loss coefficients are discussed as well as quality factors for cascades
Performance potentialities of direct energy conversion processes between electrostatic and fluid dynamic theory by Maurice Lawson ( Book )
1 edition published in 1961 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide
These processes can be grouped into two large families: (1) Processes in which charged colloids or ions of one sign are transported against an electrostatic field by viscosity interactions with a gaseous or dielectric liquid working substance; (2) Processes in which a major portion of the energy of the working substance is first transformed into kinetic energy of charged particles, which then transport the electric charges against an electrostatic field along a ballistic path
Thrust augmentation for v/stol: arl's research and concepts ( Book )
1 edition published in 1967 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide
This report deals with the Aerospace Research Laboratories' (ARL) efforts in achieving thrust augmentation for air-breathing propulsion systems. Qualitative and quantitative analyses of the thrust augmentation process are reported and compared with experimental results. Application of the process to V/STOL propulsion is also discussed
