On the lam : narratives of flight in J. Edgar Hoover's America by William Beverly( Book )

4 editions published in 2003 in English and held by 241 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The fugitive is the sinister hero of many a novel (Light in August, Beloved), the luminary in a cluster of motion pictures and in other popular entertainment (Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, Bonnie and Clyde, The Fugitive, Thelma and Louise), a headliner for the daily news (O.J. Simpson, Osama bin Laden). Yet, although a paradigm and symbol, seldom has the fugitive figure been the focus of literary or cultural discussion." "Correcting that oversight, this book maps changing landscapes of criminal flight in American texts by focusing on the years between 1932 and 1952, the period when the codes of J. Edgar Hoover's FBI first prevailed. It was the time that policing was modernized and reconfigured, a time when law enforcement fought to redeem itself from the corruption and compromise of Prohibition."--Jacket

The Forward and Adjoint Monte Carlo Estimation of the Kill Probability of a Critical Component Inside an Armored Vehicle by a Burst of Fragments( Book )

1 edition published in 1980 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

Alternate forms of the defining integral which predicts the kill probability of a critical component in a military vehicle by a burst of fragments have been derived. A brief outline of a general Monte Carlo solution of each form is given. The calculational advantages of applying each solution in a ballistic vulnerability methodology are noted. A hypothetical problem is devised and its solution is calculated using each method. The answers to the problem agreed within the calculated standard deviations

A Tutorial for Using the Monte Carlo Method in Vehicle Ballistic Vulnerability Calculations( Book )

1 edition published in 1981 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

The expected value of incapacitation of military vehicles to a ballistic threat is often formulated as multiple integrals of high dimensionality. Such multiple integrals can often be evaluated most efficiently by using the Monte Carlo method if a level of confidence in the calculated answer of five percent or so is acceptable. A brief tutorial is provided which outlines this use of the Monte Carlo method. Sample problems are devised where the integrands are constructed from simple analytic functions, and the integrals are estimated by using the outlined procedures. The calculated answers to these problems are compared with their known closed form solutions. (Author)
