A voyage in the "Sunbeam" : our home on the ocean for eleven months by Annie Brassey( Book )

136 editions published between 1878 and 2014 in 3 languages and held by 596 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Annie, Lady Brassey (1839-1887) was an English travel writer and philanthropist best known for her vivid accounts of ocean journeys undertaken with her family. Her husband was a Civil Lord of the Admiralty who made many ocean voyages by steam yacht to test this new technology. Annie Brassey's description of these travels led to her becoming a best-selling author. This volume, first published in 1878, contains her lively and detailed account of her family's circumnavigation in the Sunbeam, the first circumnavigation of the world by a steam yacht. Written in the form of a diary and based on letters sent to her father, this volume mixes exotic descriptions with lively accounts of domestic life on board, and was immensely popular. The book illustrates the attitudes of middle-class Victorians to exotic locations and cultures. For more information on this author, see http://orlando.cambridge.org/public/svPeople?person_id=brasan
In the trades, the tropics, & the roaring forties by Annie Brassey( Book )

Anna, Lady Brassey (1839-1887) was an English travel writer and philanthropist best known for her vivid accounts of ocean journeys undertaken with her family. Her husband was a Civil Lord of the Admiralty who made many ocean voyages by steam yacht to test this new technology. Anna Brassey's description of these travels led to her becoming a best-selling author. In 1883 the Brasseys travelled to the Caribbean and back in the Sunbeam. Her account of the voyage, with many delightful illustrations, is vividly written in considerable detail. It mixes exotic descriptions with lively accounts of domestic life on board with her young family and dogs. Inconveniences are made light of, and she relishes new experiences and acquaintances, showing none of the condescension towards foreigners often exhibited by Victorian travellers. "This study draws on a range of source material to investigate aspects of the Brassey collection. The book begins with an overview of Lady Brassey's life and projects, as well as an examination of issues relevant to subsequent discussions of the travel literature, the photographs, and the albums in which the photographs are assembled. Lady Brassey is next considered as a traveler and a public figure, and the author gives an overview of Brassey's travel literature, placing her in her social and political context. Micklewright then considers the seventy volumes of photographs that comprise the Brassey album collection, taking an especially close look at the eight albums devoted to the Middle East
