Frontiers in quantum systems in chemistry and physics by William N Lipscomb( )

3 editions published in 2008 in English and held by 39 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The basic theory of matter on the nanoscale is quantum mechanics and the application of quantum mechanics to the study of the many-body problem in molecules and materials is a rapidly developing field of research. Frontiers in Quantum Systems defines the leading edge; hence it describes the new theoretical developments available to a wider audience and presents theories which provide, for example, new insights into the structure of increasing complex molecular systems or molecules in a variety of environments. New computational techniques and practices are accessed

The selected papers of William N. Lipscomb, Jr. : a legacy in structure-function relationships by William N Lipscomb( Book )

3 editions published in 2013 in English and held by 3 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This book compiles a wonderful collection of original scientific articles from a group of outstanding scientists from around the world who worked or have been affiliated with the Nobel Laureate Professor William N Lipscomb, Jr. throughout his scientific career. Lipscomb is a long-standing icon in the fields of structural chemistry and structural biology. One particularly interesting feature of this book is that accompanying each article is a commentary from each contributor, and a brief biography of them. Among the contributors are Nobel Laureates Roald Hoffmann, AdaYonath, and Thomas A Steitz. In addition, Lipscomb's son, James Lipscomb, comments on Lipscomb's life and science from a very unique perspective. These very personal anecdotes from a group of remarkable scientists are especially enlightening for young scientists in learning how to conduct science in general and on how a youth may grow into a great scientist. This book will appeal to young students worldwide, and will serve to encourage some of the brightest minds to enter and excel in science

How do enzymes work by William N Lipscomb( Visual )

1 edition published in 1975 in English and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Enzymes speed up (catalyse) chemical reactions by lowering the amount energy required to start the reaction. The energy required to start the reaction is called activation energy. Enzymes lower activation energy by either putting strain on the chemical bonds of a substrate molecule or bringing substrate molecules (reactants) together in the correct orientation so that they react more readily

Reading of the play "Oxygen" : followed by a discussion( Visual )

1 edition published in 2004 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

Reading of Oxygen, a play by Carl Djerassi and Roald Hoffmann, that examines the nature of what motivates a scientist. In the play, the Nobel Committee is seeking to award the first retro-Nobel, attempting to choose from among three scientists who each claimed to have discovered oxygen. The action switches to 1777, where a fictional meeting among the three scientists in presented. The scientists, English minister Joseph Priestley, Antoine Laurent Lavoisier of France and Swedish apothecary Carl Wilhelm Scheele, all lay claim to the discovery of oxygen. Largely through the words of the men's wives, truths are revealed. After the reading are two video clips of other productions of the play and one audio clip of a rap version. Professors G. Holton and W. Lipscomb lead a discussion on the play with questions directed to the authors
