The manipulation of electric charge in bulk semiconductors and their heterostructures forms the basis of virtually all contemporary electronic and opto-electronic devices. Recent studies of spin-dependent phenomena in semiconductors have now opened the door to technological possibilities that harness the spin of the electron in semiconductor devices. In addition to providing spin-dependent analogies that extend existing electronic devices into the realm of semiconductor "spintronics," the spin degree of freedom also offers prospects for fundamentally new functionality within the quantum domain, ranging from storage to computation. The opening chapters focus on the fundamental physical principles of spintronics in metals and semiconductors, including the theory of giant magnetoresistance and an introduction to spin quantum computing. Under the AASERT program, our student developed magnetically active II-VI diluted magnetic semiconductor (DMS) surface quantum well "substrates" upon which to epitaxially grow and pattern ferromagnetic Fe films in order to produce spin-dependent potentials. This material phase produced a variety of flux-focusing magnetic patterns including planar wedges and variable-spaced single domain particle arrays with nominally 0.1-0.5 micron feature sizes. These patterns are designed to create a field-driven spin-dependent energy landscape for optically-pumped or doped carriers and provide a basis for spatial measurements of electronic spin transport

Prof. David D. Awschalom, University of California, Santa Barbara, Physics Dept. While conventional electronic devices rely on charge for the storage and transport of information, the use of spin for such purposes may lead to new paradigms in quantum electronics with improved speed and qualitatively different functionality. A generic requirement of these new systems is the storage and manipulation of classical and/or quantum spin information. In a series of experiments, femtosecond-resolved optical techniques are used to create a coherent superposition of the basis spin state defined by an applied magnetic field, and to follow the phase, amplitude, and location of the precessing electronic spin population. Measurements in GaAs structures reveal dramatically increased spin memory times upon doping, resulting in a remarkable resistance to environmental decoherence on time scales exceeding 100 nanoseconds. This small dissipation enables the lateral transport of coherent spin packets over macroscopic (100 micron) length scales, providing interesting opportunities for science and technology
