The function of ornament by Farshid Moussavi( Book )

16 editions published between 2006 and 2008 in English and held by 280 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Architecture needs mechanisms that allow it to become connected to culture. It achieves this by continually capturing the forces that shape society as material to work with. Architecture's materiality is therefore a composite one, made up of visible forces (structural, functional, physical) as well as invisible forces (cultural, political, temporal). Architecture progresses through new concepts that connect with these forces, manifesting itself in new aesthetic compositions and affects. Ornament is the by-product of this process, through which architectural material is organized to transmit unique affects." "This book is a graphic guide to ornaments in the twentieth century. It unveils the function of ornament as the agent for specific affects, dismantling the idea that ornament is applied to buildings as a discrete or non-essential entity. Each case operates through greater or lesser depth to exploit specific synergies between the exterior and the interior, constructing an internal order between ornament and material. These internal orders produce expressions that are contemporary, yet whose affects are resilient in time."--BOOK JACKET

"Présente des magasins pour la marque Prada conçus par Rem Koolhass. Si toutes les innovations en matière de service aux clients et de mise en valeur de la collection n'ont pas été réalisées, elles montrent le potentiel des futures boutiques. Plus qu'une surface où stocker la marchandise, au-delà de la simple image publicitaire, l'espace de vente est en train de vivre sa révolution. Véritables analystes de marché habillés d'un design hautement technologique, ces architectures de demain participent cependant au même objectif final: l'achat

Phylogenesis : foa's ark by Foreign Office Architects( Book )

4 editions published between 2003 and 2008 in English and held by 13 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Phylogenesis--wait, we'll explain the title soon--is structured as a reflection on the work that Foreign Office Architects (FOA) has produced during its first 10 years of practice. With its genesis as a primarily speculative and academic endeavor, FOA has recently expended much energy in the development of a technical arsenal for implementing real projects. Such explorations have been undertaken through a series of competitions, speculative commissions, and lately some real projects, some of them already completed, others still under construction. The outcome of these years is seen not just as a series of experiments, defined by the specific conditions of a project, but as a consistent reservoir of architectural species to be proliferate, mutated, and evolved in the near future. With the spirit of a scientific classification, the genesis of the projects is here identified as the evolution of a series of "phylums," actualized--and simultaneously virtualized--in their application to the specific conditions where the projects take place. Phylogenesis also includes an FOA-curated compilation of previously published texts from several critics who analyze "external" topics that relate to different aspects of the firm's discourse

OfficeUS atlas( Book )

1 edition published in 2014 in English and held by 5 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

OfficeUS, the U.S. Pavilion for the 2014 International Architecture Exhibition – la Biennaledi Venezia, reframes the history of U.S. architecture through the lens of export in two interrelated constructs: “The Office” and “The Repository”. The Repository presents 1000 projects designed by 200 US offices working abroad in a chronological archive of the last100 years. Collectively these projects tell multiple, imbricated stories of U.S. firms, typologies, and technologies, as well as a broader narrative of modernization and its global reach. The Office engages these projects, revisiting their premises and conclusions over the course of the Biennale. It functions as a laboratory staffed by a diverse group of resident design partners collaborating with outpost offices and a rotating cast of visiting experts. Together, these two halves of OfficeUS create both an historical record of the U.S. contribution to global architectural thought, and a petri dish in which that record is submitted to contemporary agents of disruption and critique.0Exhibition: Venice Architecture Biennale (07.06-23.11.2014)

Verb processing : architecture boogazine( Book )

2 editions published in 2004 in English and held by 3 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This second issue of Verb looks at the formal and material possibilities within current construction. Our starting point is the present context of the information era, typified by extensive data processing, global networking and an increasingly blurred distinction between natural matter and artificial technology. First, Verb Matters reflects the actual result of the more sophisticated ideas applied to the shaping of buildings. Next, it attempts to address the growing possibilities of current technology: a living, built, artificial matter that processes information and interacts with natural beings. Having arrived at the limits at the foreseeable, we return to the contemporary world with a greater sense of what is possible. What can we really build? That's the main aspect of this survey
