Johnny e Sarah, dopo un grave lutto familiare in cui hanno perso un figlio di due anni per un male incurabile, lasciano l’Irlanda e si trasferiscono a New York. Con loro le due figlie Christy e Ariel, si stabiliscono in un palazzo abitato da tossici e disadattati. I primi problemi si palesano nella mancanza di denaro a causa dei lavori che Johnny e Sarah trovano occasionalmente: Johnny è un attore, ma durante i provini gli viene contestata l’incapacità di donare la rabbia necessaria ai ruoli da interpretare; mentre Sarah, che è insegnante, trova lavoro soltanto in un supermercato. Christy e Ariel, invece, cominciano ad apprezzare il loro nuovo mondo: durante la notte di Halloween, bussano a tutte le porte del caseggiato, fino a provocare la brusca reazione di Mateo, un omaccione di colore che vive isolato da tutti dedicandosi all’arte. Mateo dapprima si mostra infastidito, poi permette alle due bambine di entrare in casa, accogliendole con estrema gentilezza. Mateo inizia così a frequentare la famiglia irlandese, diventandone intimo amico. Qualche tempo dopo, Samantha scopre di essere incinta, ma la gravidanza non è affatto priva di problemi. Contemporaneamente si ammala gravemente Mateo e, dopo una pericolosa caduta dalle scale, è ricoverato nello stesso ospedale in cui già Samantha è stata accolta, per via di dolori sempre più insopportabili. Johnny, che ha perso la fede dopo la scomparsa del suo terzogenito, si reca nella stanza di Mateo ormai privo di conoscenza, dimostrandosi addolorato per le sorti dell’amico, ma molto più preoccupato per le sorti della neonata: il suo desiderio, manifestato all’amico inerte, è quello di assistere ad un miracolo per recuperare la fede perduta. Immediatamente dopo, ed esattamente nello stesso istante, Mateo ha un ultimo sussulto prima di morire, mentre Samantha partorisce prematuramente la bambina che, nonostante i rischi corsi, si affaccia fiduciosa alla vita
