Nonostante sia titubante, il ragazzo, su invito del controllore, sale sul convoglio, dove conosce una coetanea volitiva dalla spiccata sensibilità, un ragazzo malinconico e solitario, salito successivamente, e un presuntuoso saputello. Tra mille spettacolari traversie, il Polar Express giunge a destinazione. Qui il ragazzo trova una piazza piena di elfi festanti e vede, tra il tripudio generale, arrivare Babbo Natale, pronto alla partenza per la consegna dei regali. Una campanella, staccatasi da una renna della slitta natalizia gli rotola accanto; il ragazzo la raccoglie e la scuote: dapprima non sente nulla, ma poi, subito dopo, ammettendo di credere a ciò che sta vivendo, riesca a percepire il soave suono che si origina. Babbo Natale lo omaggia della campanella e gli raccomanda di non perderla, ma il ragazzo, durante il viaggio di ritorno non la trova più nella tasca della vestaglia in cui l’aveva riposta. Tornato a casa, il ragazzo trova un piccolo pacco, al cui interno ritrova la campanella smarrita, da cui, armonioso, fuoriesce ancora il suono del Natale
