Living alone with his dog in the remote cabin in the woods, Julius Winsome is not unlike the barren winter lands that he inhabits: remote, vacant, inscrutable. But when his dog Hobbes is killed by hunters, their carelessness -- or is it cruelty? -- sets Julius's precarious mindset on end
Schopenhauer's telescope by Gerard Donovan( Book )

33 editions published between 2003 and 2015 in 7 languages and held by 436 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In an unnamed European village, in the middle of a civil war, one man digs while another watches over him. Slowly, they begin to talk. Over the course of the afternoon, as snow falls and truckloads of villagers are corralled in the next field, we discover why they are there--not just who they are but also how sinister events in the country have led them to be separated by a deepening grave, and why the history of civilization is inseparable from the history of mass violence. Beautifully written, with a poet's eye for detail coupled with a chilling and compelling narrative drive, Schopenhauer's Telescope is current in the best sense--no thin allegory of Bosnia or Kosovo but a remarkable attempt to make art out of the brutality of life

A family is torn apart because of grief, poverty and dependence on prescription drugs. The first part - 'Sunless' - is actually the second part of the book and is told by Sunless, the son. He is involved in drug trials at Pharmalak, a large pharmaceutical company. It's not until the second part of the book' that we find out what's going on. A second son (Salt) is born, who dies at birth. This plunges the whole family into a collective downward spiral. After the child's death, his mother is depressed and can only get through the day on a cocktail of drugs. His father becomes ill, and with not enough health insurance, signs himself and his son up for drug trails with Pharmalak. He does this on the condition that the family will always be looked after and that his wife will have enough drugs to alleviate her depression

Une famille passagère : roman by Gerard Donovan( Book )

2 editions published in 2016 in French and held by 14 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
