A study of parent and family risk, promotive, and mediating factors as correlates of competence in a sample of children identified as at-risk for early school failure by Margaret Beebe-Frankenberger ( Book )

The present etiologic study examines adolescent students whose one common factor is a primary grade teacher's evaluation that the student was "at-risk for school failure" because of poor academic progress and/or problem behavior. A literature review of risk models and selected risk studies of school competence is presented. Early primary grade and adolescent cognitive, academic, and social competence is studied within the group of students in relation to within-child, parent, family, and environmental characteristics. The students are categorized by applying special education definitional criteria using primary grade measures. Risk factors are examined by groups of adolescents who actually did receive special education services and those who met definitional criteria.
