Powerless science? : science and politics in a toxic world( Book )

9 editions published between 2013 and 2016 in English and held by 148 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In spite of decades of research on toxicants, along with the growing role of scientific expertise in public policy and the unprecedented rise in the number of national and international institutions dealing with environmental health issues, problems surrounding contaminants and their effects on health have never appeared so important, sometimes to the point of appearing insurmountable. This calls for a reconsideration of the roles of scientific knowledge and expertise in the definition and management of toxic issues, which this book seeks to do. It looks at complex historical, social, and political dynamics, made up of public controversies, environmental and health crises, economic interests, and political responses, and demonstrates how and to what extent scientific knowledge about toxicants has been caught between scientific, economic, and political imperatives

Patrimoine et communautés savantes( Book )

5 editions published between 2009 and 2010 in French and held by 108 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

9 editions published between 1997 and 2001 in French and Undetermined and held by 80 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

THIS THESIS AIMS TO RECONSIDER THE TRADITIONAL HISTORIOGRAPHY OF RADIOACTIVITY, WHICH HAS USUALLY BEEN ASSIMILATED TO ATOMIC AND NUCLEAR PHYSICS. FOCUSING ON THE CASE OF THE CURIE LABORATORY, IT SHOWS THAT BEFORE THE FIRST WORLD WAR, THE AREA OF RADIOACTIVITY WAS DEFINED IN THE BOUNDERIES OF PHYSICS AND CHEMISTRY AND REPRESENTED AN HETEROGENEOUS SET : EACH LABORATORY HAD ITS OWN INSTRUMENTATION, MATERIAL AND THEORETICAL PRACTICES, ACTIVITIES WHICH CHARACTERIZED AND STRUCTURED IT. THIS STUDY DESCRIBES THE REGIME OF FUNCTIONNING OF THE CURIE LABORATORY BY CONSIDERING ALL ITS ACTIVITIES AND TRYING TO RECOVER THE OWN RESEARCH LOGIC AND ACTION OF ITS DIRECTOR MARIE CURIE. BASED ON IMPORTANT ARCHIVE MATERIALS, THIS WORK PRESENTS MARIE CURIE AS A REAL SCIENTIFIC ENTREPRENEUR WHO SUCCEEDED IN ESTABLISHING ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH LABORATORIES IN FRANCE AND IN SETTING IT OF THE CENTER OF A POWERFUL SCIENTIFIC, INDUSTRIALIST, MEDICAL, INSTRUMENTAL AND METROLOGICAL NETWORK. A STRATEGY OF ACCUMULATION OF RADIOACTIVE SUBSTANCES (RADIUM, POLONIUM, ACTINIUM ...), INITIATED VERY EARLY, ALLOWED THE CURIE LABORATORY TO POSITION ITSELF IN THE RADIOACTIVISTS COMMUNITY AS AN IMPORTANT SPECIALIST OF THE PREPARATION OF RADIOACTIVE SOURCES. THIS LABORATORY PLAYED A KEY ROLLE FOR ALL PEOPLE INTERESTED IN THE STUDIES AND APPLICATIONS OF RADIOELEMENTS, THE SCIENTISTS OF COURSE, BUT ALSO THE MINING PROSPECTORS, THE INDUSTRIALISTS OR THE PHYSIOLOGISTS

3 editions published in 2015 in French and held by 68 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

3 editions published between 1998 and 2006 in French and held by 5 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

1 edition published in 2015 in French and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The Conservatoire des Arts et Métiers held a key role in the spreading of technical knowledge and innovation in railways during the 19th century. Between the 1820's and the late 1890's, the Conservatoire, in charge of supporting industrial development, was heavily involved in introducing the railway technologies in France and was a relay of innovation in this field. The study of the technical higher education at the Conservatoire, provided by leading personalities of the scientific and industrial world to an audience of workers, foremen and industrialists and the analysis of the collection of objects, models, drawings and photographs now preserved by the Musee des Arts et Metiers highlight in an original way the history of railways, from a multiple points of view that is construction and maintenance of infrastructure, locomotives and means of traction, rolling stock or operation and safety devices. The enquiry on the professors' social networks reminds us of the central position of the Conservatoire, where learned societies, industrial world and political sphere converged. Starting point of this research, the study of the collection required the development of a specific methodology to identify and interpret these items as sources. The contextualization of these collections together with the lessons of the Conservatoire and the history of railways allow us to make a contribution to the institution's history regarding both the higher education and the technical collections
From an art to a science : chimie colloidale, pigments et recherche fondamentale chez du Pont de Nemours : 1900-1945 by Augustin Cerveaux( )

2 editions published between 2010 and 2011 in French and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This dissertation deals with the emergence and growth of colloid chemistry in the early twentieth century, focusing particularly on the history of the colloid group set up at Du Pont, a major American chemical company, during the interwar period. It explores the relationship between the scientific issues raised by "colloidal" substances, and the technical, industrial and economic dimensions of the associated materials. The concept of "ontological shift of materials", recently forged by two historians of chemistry, is appropriated as an interpretative framework to account for these evolutions in colloid science and technology. The paint and varnish industry, whose materials were then largely considered as colloidal, is taken as a major case study to analyze these relationships and evolutions, and its history is explored since the beginning of the century. The group was propelled by the quantification of the microstructure of these materials, in order to better explain and master their practical properties. The dissertation details why and how this new understanding of the properties of many substances on the basis of their microscopic components became, from the interwar onwards, embedded in the "rationalization" of the properties of materials, the processes to produce them, as well as the associated patents. This rationalization of products and processes is concomitant to the emergence of mass consumption - and the new emphasis on the "consumer" figure within companies - of industrially produced goods, particularly those of the paint and varnish industry

1 edition published in 2008 in French and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

This thesis deals with scientists facing occupational risks due to radioactivity in France, from 1901 to 1967. Scientists are indeed at the same time victims of the dangers of radiations, experts on the hazardous substances and in charge of the organisation of protection. My study explores their role in the process of risks management and regulation and confronts it to the daily scientific practices in laboratories, through the examples of several laboratories in distinct scientific disciplines: the Laboratoire Curie, at the Radium Institute of Paris during the interwar period and the Laboratory of Nuclear Chemistry, the Laboratory of Nuclear Physics and the Laboratory of Biophysics of Strasbourg, after 1945. This history is thus part of an History of Sciences and Medicine, but is also closed to central topics of an History of Environmental Hazards, especially when it comes to risks in the workplace due to toxic substances. It also takes into account gender issue in the setting of regulation and protection against radiations
