Language contact and lexical enrichment in Israeli Hebrew by Ghil'ad Zuckermann( Book )

13 editions published between 2003 and 2016 in English and held by 196 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Israeli Hebrew is a spoken language, 'reinvented' over the course of the twentieth century. It has responded to the social demands of the newly emerging state, as well as to escalating globalization, with a vigorously developing lexicon, enriched by multiple foreign language contact. In this detailed and rigorous study, the author provides a principled classification of neologisms, their semantic fields and the roles of source languages, along with a sociolinguistic study of purists' and ordinary native speakers' attitudes towards lexical enrichment and the tension between linguistic creativity and the preservation of a distinct language identity. At the beginning of the third millennium, our world is characterized by worldwide communication and vast distribution of technological and talknological devices. The mobility of the word respects no borders and the extent of that mobility may not be paralleled even in future (less heterogeneous) generations. The study of the modes and dynamics of language contact could hardly be more timely

They came, they heard, they documented: the Dresden missionaries as lexicographers by Rob Amery( Book )

1 edition published in 2014 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

"Amongst the earliest observers of Aboriginal languages in South Australia were three German missionaries, Clamor Schürmann, Christian Teichelmann and Eduard Meyer of the Dresden Mission Society. Their work on the Kaurna, Barngarla and Ngarrindjeri languages is superior to that of their contemporaries, both in terms of quantity and quality. Despite some obvious shortcomings, especially in relation to their documentation of nature, they succeeded, where others failed, to document in detail some of the complexities of these languages such as kinship systems and the functional properties of words. Their mission to impart the word of God led them to consider the inner world of Aboriginal peoples and to document their ways of thinking and behaving . Without the work of the Dresden missionaries our knowledge of these languages would be greatly diminished. Current language revival efforts in these three languages are considerably enhanced by their records. In fact, little would be possible in Barngarla and Kaurna without their work."--[From Abstract]
How do you fill all the gaps in the dictionary? : Identifying lexical development stratagies for re-awakening Australian languages by John Robert Hobson( Book )

1 edition published in 2014 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

"As more and more Aboriginal communities in southern Australia seek to revive languages that have fallen from use and memory, they are invariably confronted by the dearth of source at their disposal. While any lack of resources describing grammar, speech style and genre will be a significant problem for language reclaimers, it is the apparent 'gap' in dictionaries and wordlist that are often perceived to be most critical in the language reclamation task. Any existing records of a language's lexicon are likely to be very limited in volume, focus on outsiders' perceptions of exotica, and consequently lacking in words to talk about everyday life, either past or present. Even in code-switching methods of reclamation, such as Amery's (2000) formulaic approach, the absence of many ordinary lexical items soon limited progress ... this paper report s on an exercise in 'remedial lexicography' that aims to respectfully offer Australian reclamation activist a broad set of prescriptive options for lexical replacement and expansion derived from published sources, advice from others in the field and the author's experience. In so doing it seeks to balance a presumed preference for typological consistency with the inevitability of substratum, English will maintain it's overwhelming dominance."--[From Abstract]

Reviving unique words : the niche of scientific names by David Nash( Book )

1 edition published in 2014 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

"The concept of endangered word is defined. The possibility of a word being?the same word? across more than one language allows for recognition of degrees of endangerment of a word. The rarer a word is cross-linguistically, the more it is at risk of fading away. A minor way to continue an endangered word, and thereby reduce its endangerment, is to incorporate it into scientific terminology, in particular into a standard biological (Linnæan) name. Some examples are given of how scientific borrowing has popularised words from severely disused languages, and of recent adoption of terms from currently endangered languages."--[From abstract]
Stop, revive, survive : lessons from the Hebrew revival applicable to the reclamation, maintenance and empowerment of Aboriginal languages and cultures by Ghil'ad Zuckermann( )

1 edition published in 2011 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

"This article provides comparative insights and makes information about the Hebrew revival accessible to Australian linguists and Aboriginal revival activists ... this article proposes that there are linguistic constraints applicable to all revival attempts. Mastering them would be useful to endangered languages in general and to Aboriginal linguistic revival in particular. This article contributes towards the establishment of Revival Linguistics, a newly distinct discipline and paradigm ..." [authors abstract]
