Laminar flow control (LFC) technologies reduce heat-transfer rates as well as the weight and complexity of thermal protection system (TPS). The laminar run can be substantially increased using an ultrasonically absorptive coating (UAC). The project is focused on maturing of the UAC-LFC methodology. Key components of the effort include wind-tunnel experiments, theoretical analysis, direct numerical simulation, fabrication and testing of ceramic materials that integrate UAC and TPS functions. To aid in the design of UAC with regular microstructure to be tested the CUBRC LENS I tunnel, parametric studies of the UAC-LFC performance have been conducted. The UAC parameters providing significant (more than twice) increase of the laminar run were predicted. Our theoretical model dealing with UAC of random microstructure has been refined. Direct numerical simulation of UAC roughness and pore-end effects has been started. A method of ceramic UAC fabrication was formulated and first ceramic UAC samples were made. An apparatus for benchmark measurements of UAC ultrasonic absorption was assembled and its robustness was demonstrated at low ambient pressures relevant to high-altitude flight conditions. The cone model with the felt-metal coating has been prepared for transition experiments in the ITAM AT-303 tunnel at Mach=8. The UAC-LFC technology is now approaching the large-scale demonstration stage in the CUBRC LENS tunnel as well as fabrication of ceramic UAC samples integrated into TPS

Laminar Turbulent Transition in a Hypersonic Boundary Layer. Receptivity and Instability Pre-History( Book )

This report results from a contract tasking Moscow Inst. of Physics and Technology as follows: The contractor will perform research in accordance with contractor's proposal entitled, 'Laminar-Turbulent Transition in an Hypersonic Boundary Layer.' This report addresses the initial phase of hypersonic boundary-layer transition comprising excitation of unstable normal modes and their downstream evolution from receptivity regions to the instability growth onset (instability pre-history problem). It is shown that this phase is more complicated than in subsonic and moderate supersonic cases due to the following features of the disturbance field: (1) the first and second modes are synchronized with acoustic waves near the body nose region; (2) further downstream the first mode is synchronized with entropy/vorticity waves; (3) near the instability growth onset the first mode is synchronized with the second mode. Disturbance behavior in the synchronism regions (2) and (3) are studied using the multiple-mode method, which accounts for interaction between modes of discrete and continuous spectrum due to nonparallel effects of the mean flow. It is shown that vorticity/entropy waves are partially swallowed by the boundary layer and effectively generate the first mode due to Synchronism (2). This mechanism can compete with the leading edge receptivity to the freestream acoustic waves in cases of 'quiet' freestream conditions and conical body configurations. The inter-mode exchange rule coupling input and output characteristics of the first and second modes crossing the branch point vicinity was established. Combination of the receptivity estimates related to Synchronism (2) and the inter-mode exchange rule related to Synchronism; (3) allows the evaluation of instability initial amplitudes required for the PSE calculations of the transition onset point

Abstract : We report on the synthesis and spectroscopic characterization of alkali metal intercalated ZrSe2 single crystals. Abstract : We report on the synthesis and spectroscopic characterization of alkali metal intercalated ZrSe2 single crystals. ZrSe2 is produced by chemical vapour transport and then Li is intercalated. Intercalation is performed from the liquid phase ( via butyllithium) and from the vapour phase. Raman spectroscopy of intercalated ZrSe2 reveals phonon energy shifts of the Raman active A1g and Eg phonon modes, the disappearance of two-phonon modes and new low wavenumber Raman modes. Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy is used to perform a mapping of the Fermi surface revealing an electron concentration of 4.7 × 10 14 cm −2 . We also perform vapour phase intercalation of K and Cs into ZrSe2 and observe similar changes in the Raman modes as for the Li case
