Carol Klein's favourite plants by Carol Klein( Book )

3 editions published in 2012 in English and held by 125 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"In this book Carol Klein celebrates her favourite plants. Setting aside more conventional ways of classification, she urges the gardener to choose what they grow according to plant personalities, asserting that personality traits are as valuable as height, habit and flower colour when planning your planting. For example, good-natured 'bread-and-butter' plants contribute to the overall beauty of a garden for months, whereas 'shooting stars' offer a brief but breathtaking performance. 'Touchy-feely' plants add rich sensuality in contrast to the dash of frivolity provided by 'wafty whisperers'. Illustrated with superb photographs by Jonathan Buckley, [this book] will inspire both new and experienced gardeners to see magic in every plant. The result will be a garden of subtlety and richness."--Publisher description

Differences in science concepts held by children from three social-economic levels by Carol Klein( Book )

7 editions published between 1969 and 1975 in English and held by 11 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Studied were third and fourth grade children, from schools designated as exclusively serving low, middle, or high social-economic areas in St. Paul, Minnesota, to determine differences in understanding of science concepts and methods. Test items were administered orally and included fifteen questions selected from the school system basic science test plus items on how to find out answers to the questions. For the pilot study, responses from third graders were compared in tape recorded and written form. Three-hundred-ten fourth graders in fifteen classes from nine schools were given the written test. Test scores were treated using analysis of variance and covariance with adjustments for I.Q. differences. Concluded was that differences in understanding science were associated with socioeconomic factors and that using the same texts and materials with all groups may not be an effective teaching method. Lower social-economic groups may need more experimentation and observation. (Jm)
