4 editions published between 1857 and 1860 in French and held by 25 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This is a report on the measurement of the meridian which was set now under Unesco World Heritage. The Russian-Scandinavian measurements were of great value to geodesy and practical astronomy - it was the first exact measurement of the shape of the earth. Throughout his career Struve (1793-1864) was active in geodetic studies. In 1816 he began three years work on the triangulation of Livonia, at the request of the Livonian Economic Society. The entire project of the measurement of the meridian was finished by 1855, and Struve played a large part in organizing and processing the data for publication between 1856 and 1857. Carl Friedrich Tenner (1783 - 1859) was born in Viru county, Estonia. He started with geodesy studies in St. Petersburg in 1802. In 1809 he got an order to establish a triangulation network from St. Petersburg to Tallinn via Narva and back to Tartu. In 1816 he started to establish a triangulation network in Lithuania. In 1828 an agreement to join arc measurements of Struve and Tenner was made, where Tenner's responsibility was geodesy and Struve's astronomy. The astronomic- trigonometric measurement of Tartu (Struve) Meridian Arc (1816-1852) was the most important scientific-historic achievement of F.G.W. Struve and C.Fr. Tenner. They succeeded in determining the almost 3000 km long section of the Meridian Arc between the mouth of Danube and the Artic Ocean with the accuracy of ñ12 m. The comparison of data of different arc sections indicated that the length of arc corresponding to one degree of latitude increased unevenly towards the pole. The measurement results were used by C.F. Gauss for specification of cartographic projections and by F.W. Bessel for determination of spheroidal earth's new parameters.- DSB XIII, 108-112; Hockey [ed.] BEA II, 1101-02 [Alan H. Batten]
