Focuses on a phase of the Algerian struggle for liberation from French colonial rule: the period from 1954-1957, the FLN's success in Algiers after regrouping and the French counterattack under Colonel Mathieu. Pontecorvo conceived the film as a homage to the people who struggle for independence in the third world. His approach is thus more lyrical than analytical resting on 'fictionalizing the documentary, borrowing its style and modes and placing them in a dialectical relationship with his (historical) data'. The film is also notable for the creative use of Morricone's score both parallel with and in counterpoint to the images
