The global carbon cycle and the feasibility of space-borne CO₂ observations by Inez Fung ( Visual )
2 editions published between 2003 and 2012 in English and held by 5 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Prof. Inez Fung, Dept. of Earth & Planetary Science, Dept. of Environmental Science, Policy & Management, UC Berkeley talks about CO₂, approximately half of which released to the atmosphere by fossil fuel combusion has remained in the atmosphere. This talk reviews the hunt for the elusive carbon sink using atmospheric CO₂ measurements in the remote marine boundary layer. The Orbiting Carbon Observatory (OCO) proposes to derive the column mixing ratio of CO₂ from space-based spectra of sunlight in the near-infrared CO₂ and O₂ bands. The challenges of making and interpreting OCO data are presented
An ecologist in space the Earth from 240 miles up ( )
2 editions published in 2003 in English and held by 5 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Dr. Piers Sellers, an Earth scientist specializing in biosphere-atmosphere interaction, was an astronaut on the STS-112 Mission to the International Space Station in October 2002 and did three space walks, logging over 252 hours in space. Here he presents video and still photos of the Earth from space and reflects on his personal experiences as an astronaut and an earth scientist

Geographic patterns of carbon dioxide emissions from fossil-fuel burning, hydraulic cement production, and gas flaring on a one degree by one degree grid cell basis 1950 to 1990 by Robert J Andres ( Book )
2 editions published between 1997 and 1999 in English and held by 3 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Data sets of one degree latitude by one degree longitude carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions in units of thousand metric tons of carbon (C) per year from anthropogenic sources have been produced for 1950, 1960, 1970, 1980 and 1990. Detailed geographic information on CO₂ emissions can be critical in understanding the pattern of the atmospheric and biospheric response to these emissions. Global, regional and national annual estimates for 1950 through 1992 were published previously. Those national, annual CO₂ emission estimates were based on statistics on fossil-fuel burning, cement manufacturing and gas flaring in oil fields as well as energy production, consumption and trade data, using the methods of Marland and Rotty. The national annual estimates were combined with gridded one-degree data on political units and 1984 human populations to create the new gridded CO₂ emission data sets. The same population distribution was used for each of the years as proxy for the emission distribution within each country. The implied assumption for that procedure was that per capita energy use and fuel mix is uniform over a political unit. The consequence of this first-order procedure is that the spatial changes observed over time are solely due to changes in national energy consumption and nation-based fuel mix. Increases in emissions over time are apparent for most areas

Climate change new scientific challenges by Inez Fung ( Visual )
1 edition published in 2008 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide
Inez Fung, Prof. of Atmospheric Science, UC Berkeley, states that the 4th Assessment Report of the International Panel on Climate Change concludes that recent changes in the climate system are most likely due to human activities. This talk reviews the findings of the IPCC report, climate feedback processes not included in the last generation of climate models, and summarizes new challenges to our understanding of climate change since the IPCC report. Much research is needed to improve preditions of the timing and magnitude of climate change for the next decades. The Lorenz 1963 model of chaos will be used to explore whether we can predict abrupt climate change
