1920. Leurs parents ayant été portés disparus lors d'une mission au Xinjiang, Rebecca et Doug, respectivement âgés de quinze et treize ans, sont confiés à leur oncle Fritzroy MacKenzie, un capitaine au long cours, instigateur d'importantes expéditions scientifiques. Alors qu'ils naviguent en mer de Chine, ils explorent secrètement les cales de l'Expédient, où ils découvrent que leur oncle, ainsi que leurs parents, font partie de la société secrète du Cercle du Savoir. La mission de cette dernière semble étroitement liée à l'existence du zoridium, un minerai dont l'incroyable force énergétique pourrait mener à des progrès scientifiques radicaux et bénéfiques, mais également permettre la création d'armes susceptibles de détruire la Terre entière. Or, le seigneur de guerre chinois Sheng-Fat a réussi à entrer en possession de cette matière et à fabriquer des torpilles, que MacKenzie est chargé de récupérer en investissant sa forteresse de l'île Wenzi. Mais les investigations de Becca et Doug sont brutalement interrompues lorsque leur oncle découvre qu'ils ont outrepassé ses ordres et qu'il les confie à la tenancière d'une pension de Shanghai. Les deux adolescents y sont contactés par un homme mystérieux affirmant être en mesure de leur donner des renseignements sur la disparition de leurs parents.
