However he also has to experience the war in the country's occupied zones and some vicious prejudice when he discovers some Israelis cannot accept that Jews can also be black. With the help of a local leader he grows into an idealistic young medical student, and secretly writes letters to his real mother back home. Schlomo is forced to make the heart-wrenching decision about whether to admit to the deception that has shadowed his entire childhood

A celebrated conductor of the Bolshoi Orchestra in Moscow loses his post during the Soviet regime when he refuses to fire his Jewish musicians. Twenty-five years later, the man is working as a custodian in the same theatre and helps his wife organize mock demonstrations of communist nostalgia. One day he intercepts an invitation for the Theatre du Chatelet in Paris and decides it is time to bluff his way to a comeback. He agrees to do the concert meant for the official orchestra and rounds up his old orchestra buddies as well as a few hilarious new entries

Andreï Filipov è un direttore d'orchestra deposto dalla politica di Breznev e derubato della musica e della bacchetta. Rifiutatosi di licenziare la sua orchestra, composta principalmente da musicisti ebrei, è costretto da trent'anni a spolverare e a lucidare la scrivania del nuovo e ottuso direttore del Bolshoi. Un fax indirizzato alla direzione del teatro è destinato a cambiare il corso della sua esistenza. Il Théâtre du Châtelet ha invitato l'orchestra del Bolshoi a suonare a Parigi. Seitdem fristet er ein tristes Dasein als Hauswart im Moskauer Bolschoi-Theater. Eines Tages fällt ihm ein Fax in die Hände, mit dem das Bolschoi Orchester für ein Konzert ins "Théâtre du Châtelet" nach Paris eingeladen wird, um die Starviolinistin Anne-Marie Jacquet zu begleiten. Andrei sieht die Chance für sein Comeback gekommen. Er trommelt seine etwas in die Jahre gekommene Orchestertruppe zusammen und reist mit ihr nach Paris.
