A review of school-based drug education in Australia, 1978-1990 : a report undertaken at the request of the Department of Community Services and Health by Ray James( Book )

2 editions published in 1991 in English and held by 12 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This report reviews the formally documented evaluations of school based drug education conducted in Australia between 1978 and 1990. Fifteen studies are described. Analysis of these 'portraits' indicates that Australian educators have been successful in transferring international drug education research into the Australian context. Given the complexity of drug use and misuse in this society, however, it is virtually impossible to state that school based drug education is effective or that it is ineffective. This review indicates that there has been an enormous difference in program intensity, teacher preparation, quality control and evaluation research methodology amongst drug education programs. Program effects vary depending on participant's age, gender, and experience with drugs. The effect on outcomes is also inconsistent; knowledge almost always increases while attitudes and behaviours are more difficult to change. The report concludes with recommendations for future program planning, evaluation and funding of school based drug education
