Biology unmoored : Melanesian reflections on life and biotechnology by Sandra C Bamford( )

12 editions published in 2007 in English and held by 1,605 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Superbly researched and masterfully written, Biology Unmoored is an engaging examination of what it means to live in a world that is not structured in terms of biological thinking. Drawing upon almost three years of ethnographic research in the highlands of Papua New Guinea, Sandra Bamford describes a world in which physiological reproduction is not perceived to ground human kinship or human beings' relationships to the organic world. Using indigenous understandings as a counter-reflexive voice through which to consider recent social and technological developments in Europe and North America, Bamford exposes the ways in which Western ideas about relatedness depend on a notion of physiological reproduction. In the process, the author challenges many taken-for-granted assumptions about biology that have underpinned a great deal of social science theory. Her innovative analysis includes a discussion of the advent of Assisted Reproductive Technologies (ARTs), the mapping of the human genome, cloning, the commodification of biodiversity, and the manufacture and sale of Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs). On a broader scale, this pioneering book engages at a comparative level with questions concerning what it is to be human, how we perceive our ancestors and descendants, issues of gender and kinship, the politics of reproduction, and the role of science and technology in the contemporary world
Kinship and beyond : the genealogical model reconsidered( Book )

17 editions published between 2008 and 2012 in English and held by 299 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The genealogical model has a long-standing history in Western thought. The contributors to this volume consider the ways in which assumptions about the genealogical modelin particular, ideas concerning sequence, essence, and transmissionstructure other modes of practice and knowledge-making in domains well beyond what is normally labeled "kinship." The detailed ethnographic work and analysis included in this text explores how these assumptions have been built into our understandings of race, personhood, ethnicity, property relations, and the relationship between human beings and non-human sp
Embodying modernity and postmodernity : ritual, praxis, and social change in Melanesia( Book )

7 editions published between 2005 and 2007 in English and held by 184 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This collection of original essays critically examines the relationship between ritual, embodiment, and social change in the South Pacific. Over the past few decades, the societies of Melanesia have undergone profound and revolutionary social change. Encounters with colonialism, postcolonialism, and the forces of globalization have put indigenous peoples in touch with processes of state formation, late capitalist culture, and the emergence of a complex network of transnational identities. In addition to shaping the contours of the nation state, these developments are having a profound impact on the nature of embodied experience. In recent years, many Melanesian societies have witnessed the rise of charismatic Christianity, changing gender configurations, and the growing use of consumerism as a means of defining new social and political hierarchies. This book provides detailed analyses of those social changes that are becoming part of contemporary Melanesia".--BOOKJACKET
