The acquisition of syntax in children from 5 to 10 by Carol Chomsky( Book )

58 editions published between 1968 and 2009 in 3 languages and held by 1,077 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In this research monograph, several areas of disparity between child and adult grammar are examined to discover at what ages the child, who is on the border of adult language competence, achieves a certain mastery of complex syntactic structures. Chapters include (1) a discussion of current notions on the nature of the linguistic process and a hypothesis about the structures which children tend to acquire late in their development, (2) a description of an experiment to test the hypothesis--the 40 children used for the sample, interview procedures, and the design of test sentences which centered on the four complex structures of "easy to see, ""promise, ""ask/tell," and pronominalization, (3) an analysis of the grammar used in the children's responses to the test sentences and the nature of the structures they used (Portions of the actual interviews, photographs of subjects using test materials, and graphs comparing the children's responses are included.), (4) a correlation of the results from the four structures tested, and (5) such conclusions as the fact that the rate of a child's growing language performance cannot be predicted, but that the order of it can be. Inside Lebanon : journey to a shattered land with Noam and Carol Chomsky( Book )

2 editions published in 2007 in English and held by 7 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This prescient and timely book documents Noam Chomsky's visit to Lebanon, in May 2006, to lecture on U.S. imperialism and the imminent crises facing the Middle East -- two months before Israel orchestrated major military campaigns against Lebanon and Palestine. During his visit, he met with political leaders -- including those of Hizbullah -- toured refugee camps, and inspected a former Israeli prison and torture compound. Inside Lebanon describes Chomsky's journey and situates it within the tragically altered context of Lebanon and Palestine before and after the war of 2006. Chomsky's essays provide a framework for understanding the role of U.S. politics, power, and policies in these conflicts by examining how the United States wages war and imposes world domination while presenting itself as the righteous protector of democracy. Ironically, U.S. efforts at imperial control generate conflict and crises within the region while undermining democracy. Inside Lebanon includes essays and photographs by Carol Chomsky, Irene L. Gendizier, Assaf Kfoury, Jennifer Loewenstein, Hanady Salman, Rasha Salti, and Fawwaz Traboulsi and provides an analysis of the social-political conditions of people in Lebanon, Gaza, and refugee camps. It situates Israeli's attacks and the position of Hizbullah and Hamas in this conflict while at the same time providing a record of events during the war, linking the conflicts on the ground to the global order."--Publisher description

Approaching Reading Through Invented Spelling by Carol Chomsky( Book )

1 edition published in 1976 in English and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Children are ready to write before they are ready to read; thus reading instruction should be an outgrowth of abilities children develop through inventing their own words. This gives children practice with the more concrete activities of word composition before they undertake the relatively abstract task of reading. Writing exercises may be given to children in order to provide background information and to show reading/writing applications in functional contexts. Another advantage to teaching reading with the child's written work is that when these children progress to reading, they will be prepared to take an active role in teaching themselves; the exposure to print helps them to answer most of their own questions and to correct their own mistakes. (Discussion following presentation of the paper is included.) (Rl)
Doing Science Constructing Scientific Theories as an Introduction to Scientific Method. Scientific Theory and Method Project (STAMPS). Technical Report by Carol Chomsky( Book )

2 editions published in 1985 in English and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The Scientific Theory and Method Project (STAMPS) is concerned with students' understanding of two areas of science in secondary schools. One is understanding what a scientific theory is, and the other is understanding the methods used in conducting scientific research. In the science curriculum these topics are often described as the process of science as opposed to scientific facts. Students, along with learning about the content of the different scientific disciplines, need an emphasis on the scientific process as well. Two questions are considered concerning students engaging in various activities presented to them: (1) how do students think about these problems; and (2) what kinds of activities and materials are best suited for this kind of introduction to the scientific method? Three components of a unit dealing with these questions have been developed and piloted. The computer program "The King's Rule" was used to introduce hypothesis formation and testing. The program "The Scientific Method" was used to study experimental conditions and the effects of phenomena under investigation. The third unit experiments with natural language phenonema. The pilot program is presented along with excerpts and transcripts taken during trials of the program. (MVL)
Linguistic Development in Children from 6 to 10. Final Report by Carol Chomsky( Book )

1 edition published in 1971 in English and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Language acquisition in children, ages 6 to 10 years, and their linguistic competence with respect to complex aspects of English syntax, are studied. The nature of specific disparities between adult and child grammar are discussed, and the gradual reduction of these disparities as the children's knowledge of language increases is traced. In all, 36 children are tested by means of psycholinguistic experiments for knowledge of 8 complex syntactic structures; 5 of the structures prove to be acquired in sequence, revealing 5 developmental stages in syntax acquisition. Of particular interest is the regular order of acquisition of structures, accompanied by considerable variation in rate of acquisition. The range of ages at each linguistic stage is considerable. The children's exposure to written language as complex language inputs is examined in relation to linguistic development rate. Reading background and current reading activity are surveyed through interviews with both children and parents and through daily records of the children's reading (and listening) over a one-week period. Information is given on amount and complexity of independent reading and listening, background in children's literature, and recall and recognition of books. Lists of books read and named are included. A formula was developed and applied to 150 books and magazines reported to judge reading complexity levels. Methods are assesed, and relationships discussed. Results show a strong correlation between reading-exposure measures and language development. (Author/CK)
