The future of development : a radical manifesto by Gustavo Esteva( )

12 editions published in 2013 in English and held by 403 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

On January 20, 1949 US President Harry S. Truman officially opened the era of development. On that day, over one half of the people of the world were defined as underdeveloped" and they have stayed that way ever since. This book explains the origins of development and underdevelopment and shows how poorly we understand these two terms. It offers a new vision for development, demystifying the statistics that international organizations use to measure development and introducing the alternative concept of buen vivir: the state of living well. The authors argue that it is possible for everyone on the planet to live well, but only if we learn to live as communities rather than as individuals and to nurture our respective commons. Scholars and students of global development studies are well-aware that development is a difficult concept. This thought-provoking book offers them advice for the future of development studies and hope for the future of humankind."

American tianxia : Chinese money, American power, and the end of history by Salvatore J Babones( )

9 editions published between 2017 and 2018 in English and held by 233 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

After a meteoric rise, China's once inexorable growth has come to a screeching halt, ending the Chinese dream of establishing a new tianxia ('harmonious order') in Asia with China at its centre. In this work, Salvatore Babones provides an up-to-date assessment of China's economic problems and how they are undermining China's challenge to a Western-dominated world. As China's neighbours and many of its own most talented people look to the United States to ensure their security and prosperity, global power is slowly but surely consolidating in a 21st-century American tianxia. A closely argued antidote to defeatist accounts of Western decline, 'American Tianxia' explores how liberal individualism has become the leitmotif of an emerging order in which people of all nationalities seek a share in the economic, cultural, and political system that is America writ large

BRICS or bust? : escaping the middle-income trap by Hartmut Elsenhans( Book )

5 editions published in 2017 in English and held by 181 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Once among the fastest developing economies, growth has slowed or stalled in Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa. What policies can governments enact to jump-start the rise of these middle-income countries? Hartmut Elsenhans and Salvatore Babones argue that economic catch-up requires investment in the productivity of ordinary citizens. Diverging from the popular narrative of increased liberalization, this book argues specifically for direct government investment in human infrastructure; policies that increase wages and the bargaining power of labor; and the strategic use of exchange rates to encourage export-led growth. These measures raise up the majority and finance future productivity by driving broader consumption and fostering investment within national borders. Though strategies like full employment, mass education, and progressive taxation are not especially controversial, none of the BRICS have truly embraced them. Examining barriers to implementation, Elsenhans and Babones find that the main obstacle to such reforms is an absence of political will, stemming from closely guarded elite privilege under the current laws. BRICS or Bust? is a short, incisive read that underscores the need for demand-driven growth and why it has yet to be achieved. -- Provided by publisher
Methods for quantitative macro-comparative research by Salvatore J Babones( )

3 editions published in 2014 in English and held by 168 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This book is, at its heart, a book about the pursuit of model-reality consistency in quantitative macro-comparative research. Quantitative macro-comparative research (QMCR) is social, political, and economic research that uses countries as cases and facts about countries as variables. This book draws on methods and methodologies from the macro-comparative literatures in sociology, political science, economics, and geography. It is designed to be read as a methodological monograph, but it will be equally appropriate as a sourcebook for postgraduate education in those fields. The chapters are sequenced in a logical progression but most professional and student researchers will be able to read individual chapters or sections of chapters independently without having to read the book from beginning to end. Thus in seminar settings particular chapters may
The new authoritarianism : Trump, populism, and the tyranny of experts by Salvatore J Babones( Book )

6 editions published in 2018 in English and held by 123 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"In this provocative and highly original book, Salvatore Babones argues that democracy has been undermined by a quiet but devastating power grab conducted by a class of liberal experts. Populism thus represents an imperfect but reinvigorating political flood that has the potential to rejuvenate democracy across the west"

Methods for quantitative macro-comparative research by Salvatore J Babones( Book )

9 editions published between 2013 and 2014 in English and held by 27 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

It is questions like these that social scientists turn to quantitative macro-comparative research (QMCR) to answer. Although many social scientists understand statistics conceptually, they struggle with the mathematical skills required to conduct QMCR. This non-mathematical book is intended to bridge that gap, interpreting the advanced statistics used in QMCR in terms of verbal descriptions that any college graduate with a basic background in statistics can follow. It addresses both the philosophical foundations and day-to-day practice of QMCR in an effort to improve research outcomes and ensure policy relevance. A comprehensive guide to QMCR, the book presents an overview of the questions that can be answered using QMCR, details the steps of the research process, and concludes with important guidelines and best practices for conducting QMCR. The book assumes that the reader has a sound grasp of the fundamentals of linear regression modeling, but no advanced mathematical knowledge is required in order for researchers and students to read, understand, and enjoy the book. A conversational discussion style supplemented by 75 tables and figures makes the book's methodological arguments accessible to both students and professionals. Extensive citations refer readers back to primary discussions in the literature, and a comprehensive index provides easy access to coverage of specific techniques.--
