Comparison of nurse mentor and instructor evaluation of clinical performance by Kathleen Marie Seurynck ( Book )
1 edition published in 2012 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide
Evaluating a student in the clinical setting has been difficult in nursing schools. The ever-changing environment, instructor bias and subjectivity, validity of evaluation tools and lack of training in evaluation techniques are all challenges of clinical evaluation. Partnerships in hospitals and schools of nursing have been on the rise and many schools are having bedside nurse mentors take a greater role in educating and evaluating students. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to compare the level of agreement between nursing instructors and nurse mentors in the evaluation of student clinical performance in a new model of clinical education at the University of Michigan Health System (UMHS). A comparative, quantitative study was done comparing nurse mentor and nurse instructor evaluation scores on 81 baccalaureate nursing students in a new model of clinical education. Results showed there was poor to slight agreement on all measures. Group means were calculated on all ten questions to further understand the low level of agreement between mentors and instructors. It was found that nurse mentors rated student nurses higher than nurse instructors on all questions from the evaluation tool. Implications of this study may require more nurse mentor preparation on evaluation of students

Mentor satisfaction using a new model of clinical education by Linda Anne Myler ( )
1 edition published in 2012 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide
Academic and practice partnerships continue to expand to meet the needs of the changing health care system. The University of Michigan Health System and the School of the Nursing formed a partnership in March 2007 and are currently implementing a new model of nursing education. This innovation in the way nursing students are educated has required a significant climate shift and a change in roles of everyone involved. In this new model, staff nurse mentors, in collaboration with nursing faculty, are now primary clinical educators. This descriptive study examined mentor satisfaction and compared satisfaction to their level of education, experience and work location. An 18 question survey was distributed via an all nurse email list in December 2011. Analysis of survey questions revealed six themes related to mentor perception: satisfaction, understanding, student preparedness, feedback and evidence based practice. Findings indicated that mentors were satisfied with the new model of clinical education. Nurses with less experience were more satisfied while the level of education and unit were not found to be statistically significant. Future research should be directed at support of the relationship between mentors, educators and students
