The film is based on a folk tale called Sasirekha Parinayam popular in Andhra Pradesh, based on the Mahabharata but not present in it. During the Pandavas' Agnyatavasa, Arjuna sends his wife Subhadra and their son Abhimanyu to Dwaraka to stay with her brothers, Krishna and Balarama. Sasirekha, Balarama's daughter and Abhimanyu are in love with each other from their childhood. Their families had agreed to get them married when they grow up. However, Balarama's wife refuses to honour that commitment, as the Pandavas lost their kingdoms in gamble and are in exile. Gemini Ganesan is the son of Balaiah, a rich landlord. Savitri is the daughter of a poor peasant who works for Balaiah. Gemini and Savitri meet in the train and they fall in love. Initially Savitri is unaware of Gemini's background. She hesitates to reciprocate Gemini's love when she finds that he is Balaiah's son. But Gemini persuades her and marries her secretly. Gemini goes abroad for higher education. Balaiah disapproves of Gemini-Savitri marriage and he wishes to conduct Gemini's marriage with a rich girl. He persuades Savitri to renounce Gemini and Savitri lives with her father. She begets a son but her father lies to her that the baby died & leaves the baby in an orphanage. Savitri meets Gemini in a wrong place and he suspects her character. Meanwhile, her son Kamal Hassan grows up as a bright student in the orphange. Fate brings Gemini, Savitri and Kamal Hassan together. Whether they reunite as a family is the rest of the storyline
