Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui : dreams of Babel( Visual )

1 edition published in 2009 in French and held by 21 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The Belgium dancer and choreographer Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui presented by the movie director Don Kent. What do we really know about this 30 year old artist who has triumphed in all the Major modern dance venues in less than a decade? Don Kent and Christian Dumais-Lvowski propose to work from these four places: Belgium, China, Corsica and India. The idea isn't to trail Larbi to four different workshops of choreographic creation, but to visit -- or revisit -- with him, these places of reflexion, inspiration and transmission of knowledge. Not a visit of the physical places but more importantly the exploration of their inner world as defined by Larbi Cherkaoui himself in his book "Pélerinage sur soi" (Pilgrimage to the self). As the young artist confesses: "I would like for this film to be a step where I can learn and discover more about myself, my desires and other things yet unknown, so that I'm not only the passive subject of this documentary, but also an actor, even a scientist, researching myself."
Shattered wings( Visual )

1 edition published in 2008 in English and held by 21 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The documentary film "Shattered wings" aims to retrace the beginnings of the creative process between three internationally reputed dancers -- Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui, Yasuyuki Shuto and Dimitri Jourde -- and the Corsican polyphonic ensemble, A Filetta, their encounter and their desire to create together a piece entitled Apocrifu for the Théâtre de la Monnaie in Brussels. Apocrifu is an introspective look into art, choreography, corporality, Corsican polyphonic singing, humanity, religion and poetry. In Antwerp, where the piece Apocrifu is being made for the Théâtre de la Monnaie in Brussels, the three dancers -- Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui, Yasuyuki Shuto and Dimitri Jourde -- are working together with a mix of codes and vocabulary, underscored by the differences in their style and training -- circus arts, classical and contemporary dance; as many schools of dance as nationalities, all delineated by the Corsican polyphonic singing of A Filetta, which accompanies them through the entire journey. The documentary on Apocrifu opens like a spool of thread, as a series of passages, bridges, parallels in a story of religions, and in the stories that culturally compose each individual. Each gesture brings us to another movement, each reply to another question, each man to another man. The picture painted of religion is a sobering one, but it opens doors to intermingling, to exchange, and, from this "source", it denounces the artifices of religions, their rules, consistently rooting for respect for human rights
The ethics of art : ecological turns in the performing arts by Karolien Byttebier( Book )

1 edition published in 2014 in English and held by 17 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Within the arts there is a growing ethical consciousness, both in the way it relates to the larger social, political and economic challenges and in the way it reflects on its own production and distribution mechanisms. This book attempts to describe how artistic imagination can produce new situations, based on the potentials and limits of the individual 'body' within its environment. The first section, Ecosophy, focuses on eco-art practices and how the ethical turn in the arts implies a greater receptivity for the environment we live in. The second section, Caring for the Body, focuses more on dance and the renewed interest in 'the body', both on the level of the individual and on that of the larger 'body politic' of cooperation and collaboration
