Papers of Winthrop Murray Crane, 1877-2000, include correspondence pertaining to Crane's tenures as lieutenant governor and governor of Mass., 1896-1903, and United States senator from Mass., 1904-13. Correspondence includes letterpress books and letters received by Crane from colleagues, businessmen, and constituents pertaining to daily activities, political interests, appointments accepted and refused, and the 1902 carriage accident involving Crane and Theodore Roosevelt. The papers also include a small autograph collection of letters written to Crane from Theodore Roosevelt, William H. Taft, Woodrow Wilson, and Calvin Coolidge, among others, including a 13-page letter from Roosevelt pertaining to Crane's involvement in the mediation of the1902 national coal strike

He served as Lieutenant Governor of Massachusetts, 1897-1899; Governor of Massachusetts, 1900-1902; and United States senator, 1904-1913. He married Josephine P. Boardman in 1906
