Working time around the world : trends in working hours, laws and policies in a global comparative perspective by Sang-Heon Lee ( Book )
4 editions published in 2007 in English and held by 358 libraries worldwide
"John Maynard Keynes once made the bold prediction that the three-hour work day would prevail for his grandchildren's generation. Seventy years later, the question or working time is as pertinent as it was at the inception of the 40-hour week. Not until now, however, has there been a global comparative analysis of working time laws, policies and actual working hours. Despite a century-long optimism about reduced working hours and some progress in legal measures limiting working hours, this book demonstrates that differences in actual walking hours between industrialized and developing countries remain considerable - without any clear sign of hours being reduced. This study aims to offer some suggestions about how this gap can begin to be closed. Lee McCann and Messenger trace the theoretical background of the concept of working time before examining recent trends in working time laws in developing countries and countries in transition." "This book will be of great interest to policy-makers engaged with working conditions or health and safely, labour market experts, trade union leaders and workers' organizations, as well as academics and researchers in the fields of industrial relations, labour economics and labour law."--BOOK JACKET.
Building decent societies : rethinking the role of social security in development ( Book )
3 editions published in 2009 in English and held by 207 libraries worldwide
The downturn of the global economy has made the scope of the problems of poverty and unemployment worse across the whole world. This book makes the case for a comprehensive social security system to be developed in all countries, including the poorest ones, in order to eliminate desperate conditions of poverty, to reverse growing inequality and to sustain economic growth. The establishment of universal social security systems has been one of the cornerstones of OECD countries' successful economic and social development and has contributed to reducing poverty and fostering social inclusion in today's rich countries. It is increasingly recognized that universal social security systems have an enormous potential for low income countries which has not yet been sufficiently explored. Recognizing that economic and social development are inextricably intertwined across countries, new international strategies are required to design appropriate social security policies which would effectively help to reduce poverty and productively contribute to economic and social development.

In defence of labour market institutions : cultivating justice in the developing world ( Book )
5 editions published in 2008 in English and held by 154 libraries worldwide
In this age of globalization labour market institutions have been blamed for the poor economic performance of many developing countries. This book shows that the evidence on which this argument rests is weak. An interdisciplinary team of contributors utilize empirical data and theoretical evidence to offer a greater understanding of why formal labour market regulations and policies were implemented in developing countries, and how informal values and norms also influence the workings of the labour market. The contribution also analyse the economic effect that these institutions can have while shedding light on conceptual and methodological questions that have plagued the debate. This volume offers economic and social reasons for maintaining certain policies and standards, differentiating between the needs and challenges of countries with varying levels of income.

Uncertainty and data quality in exposure assessment ( Book )
2 editions published in 2008 in English and held by 122 libraries worldwide
Assessment of human exposure to chemicals is a critical input to risk assessment and ultimately to decisions about control of chemicals. This two-part publication aims to improve the quality of information available to decision-makers and its communication. Part one sets out ten principles for characterizing and communicating uncertainty in exposure assessment. A tiered approach to the evaluation of uncertainties using both qualitative (simple) and quantitative (more complex) methods is described. Different sources of uncertainty are identified, and guidance is provided on selecting the appropriate approach to uncertainty analysis, as dictated by the objectives of the assessment and information needs of decision-makers and stakeholders. Part two addresses the quality of data used in exposure assessment, and sets out four basic hallmarks of data quality - appropriateness, accuracy, integrity and transparency. These hallmarks provides a common vocabulary and set of qualitative criteria for use in the design, evaluation and use of exposure assessments to support decisions.--Publisher's description.

This volume addresses the possible health effects of exposure to extremely low frequency (ELF) electric and magnetic fields. It reviews the physical characteristics of ELF fields as well as the sources of exposure and measurement. However, its main objectives are to review the scientific literature on the biological effects of exposure to ELF fields in order to assess any health risks from exposure to these fields and to use this health risk assessment to make recommendations to national authorities on health protection programs. The frequencies under consideration range from above 0Hz to 100kHz.--Publisher's description.
Globalization and informal jobs in developing countries by Marc Bacchetta ( Book )
3 editions published in 2009 in English and held by 110 libraries worldwide
Economic growth has not led to a corresponding improvement in working conditions and living standards for many workers. In developing countries, job creation has largely taken place in the informal economy, where around 60 per cent of workers are employed. Most of the workers in the informal economy have limited job security, low incomes and no social protection, with limited opportunities to benefit from globalization. This study focuses on the relationship between trade and the growth of the informal economy in developing countries. Based on existing academic literature, complemented with new empirical research by the ILO and the WTO, the study discusses how trade reform affects different aspects of the informal economy. It also examines how high rates of informal employment diminish the scope for developing countries to translate trade openness into sustainable long-term growth. The report analyzes how well-designed trade and decent-work friendly policies can complement each other so as to promote sustainable development and growing prosperity in developing countries
