Energy Efficiency Issues in Wireless Sensors Networks( Book )

This project provides a comprehensive solution to achieve high energy efficiency in wireless sensor networks. The following is some research highlights of the project. (1) Proposed a novel energy model for batteries and studied the effect of battery behavior on routing in wireless sensor networks. (2) Introduced the concept of battery-aware connected dominating set (BACDS) and given a distributed algorithm to construct the set. (3) Proposed power scheduling algorithms for densely deployed sensor networks to achieve energy efficiency. (4) Studied two-layered sensor networks and presented an on-line algorithm for finding energy efficient and collision-free polling schedules and load balancing algorithms. (5) Considered energy efficient sensor deployment in large scale unattended mobile sensor networks and presented a distributed, adaptive sensor deployment algorithm that maximizes the coverage area and reduces sensor movement. (6) Investigated energy-efficient data gathering in sensor networks with mobile data collectors and designed algorithms for planning the moving path of the mobile collector and balancing traffic load in the network. (7) Introduce multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) and space-division multiple access SDMA techniques to the data gathering in sensor networks to optimize the system performance. The research results of the project have been published in 11 journal papers and 26 refereed conference papers

Abstract: "Nonblocking broadcast networks have important applications in distributed and parallel processing as well as general communication environments. Network control algorithm and its implementation of a nonblocking broadcast network figure critically in the nonblocking connection capability provided. The path set-up time is especially important in real-time parallel and distributed computing applications. In our previous paper [1], we presented a new class of multi-stage broadcast switching networks. The results lead to the currently best known explicit constructions of nonblocking broadcast switching networks with a constant number of stages relative to both crosspoint and control algorithm complexity. In this paper, we will design and analyze the sequential and parallel variations of hardware implementations of the network control algorithm to further speed up the path set-up procedure of the nonblocking broadcast networks. For three- stage version of the network denoted as v(m, n, r), it will be seen that connection requests can be satisfied in O((log r)/log log r) gate propagations in the parallel implementation compared with that in software implementation, satisfying connection requests requires O(nr) computer instructions. This controller implementation renders our nonblocking broadcast networks useful in real-time parallel and distributed computing applications which require high-speed network path set-ups."

Scalable Multicast Networks for High-Performance Computing and Communications( )

The objective of this research is to design a class of scalable interconnection networks to support arbitrary multicast communications in highly parallel computing systems. In particular, the project was concentrated on (1) designing routing strategies for multicast networks and developing a network simulator to simulate multicast networks under routing control strategies; (2) deriving necessary and sufficient conditions under which multicast networks are nonblocking; (3) establishing analytical models for the performance of multicast networks; (4) studying self-routing scheme for multicast communication; (5) studying efficient multicast communication in optical networks, and determining rearrangeable and nonblocking conditions in optical multicast networks. (6) studying efficient multicast communication (as well as general collective communication) in both electronic and optical networks Over the finding period, a number of important results were obtained and these results were reported in 22 journal papers, 1 book chapter, 6 patents (granted or pending), and 30 conference papers. The most important results of this project are summarized in the final progress report and all publications are also listed (attached)
