Expression de la tentative de rationaliser l'existence humaine, de clarifier le dédale des situations, le genre policier apporte par ailleurs à Le Fanu la nécessaire caution de la raison qui lui permet précisément de démontrer la vanité de toute espérance profonde dans ce domaine
