This film, stressing allegiance to the Fatherland, is the story of Anna, who resists her father's desire to keep her on their farm in a German-speaking area of Czechoslavakia. Falling in love with a visiting surveyor, she flees to Prague, "the all-devouring Golden City," a city which years before brought her mother to perdition. Anna cannot locate her beloved and goes to the home of her aunt where she is seduced by her cousin, Toni. When he learns that she is pregnant, he disappears and marries a rich older woman. Ruined and alone, she returns to the farm, where her father, having taken a second wife, rebuffs her. Heartbroken, she retreats to her mother's grave in a swamp and commits suicide after delivering these final words: "Forgive me father for not having loved my native country as much as you did." The melodramatic plot is overlayed with propagandistic admonishments, namely never abandon the homeland nor reject the traditional womanly role prescribed by society. To reinforce this dual message, the film surrounds the ill-fated protagonist with caricatured figures, particularly dissolute city dwellers and paints Prague as a dark, decadent metropolis of labyrinthine alleys. The film is noteworthy for its visual beauty and was the second color film to be shot by a German studio. Propaganda Minister Goebbels was pleased with the picture and allowed director Veit Harlan to make his next movie, Immensee, without interference
