This lavishly-financed production (subtitled "a film about German youth and its spirit of sacrifice") was based on the case of Herbert Norkus, a young boy murdered by Communists in 1932, and was actively endorsed by the Nazi Party and the Hitler Youth. It is the story of Heini Völker (alias Hitler Youth Quex), the 15-year-old son of Communist parents who joins the Hitler Youth and is subsequently murdered by a group of enraged and drunken Bolsheviks. The film, which ironically borrowed from such left-wing classics as Mother Krausen's journey to happiness, Kuhle Wampe, The Three penny opera and M, concretized the struggle for the German soul between National Socialism and Communism. The key scene in Hitlerjunge Quex is a conversation in which a Hitler Youth brigade leader and the Communist father fight for the young hero's mind. The film's premiere was a gala occasion preceded by the performance of a Bruckner symphony and a speech by Baldur von Schirach, leader of the Hitler Youth and author of the lyrics of the song used in the picture. The audience included most of the Party elite; their entrance to the Ufapalast am Zoo was lined by thousands of Hitler Youth in uniform
