Både Ingeborg og Kasper har lest "Kristin Lavransdatter" og vet hva som kan skje dersom døtre trosser sine fedre. Derfor reiser Kasper fortvilet tilbake til Danmark og mange triste år følger. Men så blir plutselig Ingeborg enke fordi mannen hennes får en ku i hodet. Alle blir lykkelige. Hovedtema for boka er hvordan livets tilfeldigheter kan sette store krefter i sving.
