Configurations can be studied from a graphtheoretical viewpoint via the socalled Levi graphs and lie at the heart of graphs, groups, surfaces, and geometries, all of which are very active areas of mathematical exploration. In this selfcontained textbook, algebraic graph theory is used to introduce groups; topological graph theory is used to explore surfaces; and geometric graph theory is implemented to analyze incidence geometries. After a preview of configurations in Chapter 1, a concise introduction to graph theory is presented in Chapter 2, followed by a geometric introduction to groups in Chapter 3. Maps and surfaces are combinatorially treated in Chapter 4. Chapter 5 introduces the concept of incidence structure through vertex colored graphs, and the combinatorial aspects of classical configurations are studied. Geometric aspects, some historical remarks, references, and applications of classical configurations appear in the last chapter. With over two hundred illustrations, challenging exercises at the end of each chapter, a comprehensive bibliography, and a set of open problems, Configurations from a Graphical Viewpoint is well suited for a graduate graph theory course, an advanced undergraduate seminar, or a selfcontained reference for mathematicians and researchers

A straightahead walk in an embedded Eulerian graph $G$ always passes from an edge to the oposite edge in the rotation at the same vertex. A straightahead walk is called Eulerian if all the edges of the embedded graph $G$ are traversed in this way starting from an arbitrary edge. An embedding that contains an Eulerian straightahead walk is called an Eulerian embedding. In this article we characterize some properties of Eulerian embeddings of graphs and of embeddings of graphs such that the corresponding medial graph is Eulerian embedded. We prove that that in the case of 4valent planar graphs, the number of straight ahead walks does not depend on the actual embedding in the plane. Finally, we show that the ninimal genus over Eulerian embeddings of a graph can be quite close to the minimal genus over all embeddings

A configuration is weakly flagtransitive if its group of automorphisms acts intransitively on flags but the group of all automorphisms and antiautomorphisms acts transitively on flags. It is shown that weakly flagtransitive configurations are in onetoone correspondence with bipartite $\frac{1}{2}$arctransitive graphs of girth not less than 6. Several infinite families of weakly flagtransitive configurations are given via their Levi graphs. Among others an infinite family of nonselfpolar weakly flagtransitive configurations is constructed. The smallest known weakly flagtransitive configuration has 27 points and the smallest nonselfpolar weakly flagtransitive configuration has 34 points
