Die Sozial- und Geisteswissenschaften beschäftigen sich seit einer ganzen Weile mit Raumkonzepten. Statt vom linguistic turn spricht man nun vom spatial turn. Zusammen mit dem Stichwort der Globalisierung schlägt die gegenwärtige Erschließung von Räumen durch neue Medien eine Brücke zurück in das Zeitalter des Barock. Auch damals gab es eine „Raumrevolution“: Die von ihr ausgelösten Konflikte zwischen Newtons unveränderbarem Raum und der Fragmentierung von Räumen durch die Kontingenz der Beobachtung waren geprägt von einer Zeit des religiösen und politischen Umbruchs und dem Wissen um die Entdeckung der Neuen Welt. 0Der vorliegende Band präsentiert die Ergebnisse des 13.?Jahrestreffens des Wolfenbütteler Arbeitskreises für Barockforschung, der vom 26. bis zum 29.?August 2009 in der Herzog August Bibliothek Wolfenbüttel stattfand. In vier Sektionen gruppieren sich die folgenden Schwerpunkte um den Raum als ein Leitmotiv des Barock: Räume im Spannungsverhältnis zwischen sakralen und profanen Funktionen; Räume des Experimentierens mit der Vorstellung und Inszenierung barocker Welten; die Kultivierung barocker Gelehrsamkeit in Form von Denk-, Lehr- und Kommunikationsräumen; Schwellen- und Grenzräume des barocken Kulturtransfers. Dem Verständnis des Raumes im Barock nähert man sich deshalb am besten von der Grenze her, die, wenn schärfer in den Blick genommen, dem Raum Perspektive gibt. Wenn es auch weder möglich noch wünschenswert erscheint, einen genauen Raumbegriff des Barock festzulegen, so zeigen die Beiträge, dass man dieser Absicht durch ein interdisziplinäres Studium des synästhetischen Erlebnisses barocker Räume am nächsten kommt
