In this paper we analyze asymptotic stability, instability and stabilization for the relative equilibria, i.e. equilibria modulo a group action, of natural mechanical systems. The practical applications of these results are to rotating mechanical systems where the group is the rotation group. We use a modification of the Energy-Casimir and Energy-Momentum methods for Hamiltonian systems to analyze systems with dissipation. Our work couples the modern theory of block diagonalization to the classical work of Chetaev

In this paper we discuss the stabilization of the rigid body dynamics by external torques (gas jets) and internal torques (momentum wheels). We compare the stabilizing quadratic feedback law for a single external torque recently analyzed in Bloch and Marsden [1989b.c] with quadratic feedback torques for internal rotors. We show that with such torques, the equations for the rigid body with momentum wheels are Hamiltonian with respect to a Lie-Poisson bracket structure. Further. these equations are shown to generalize the dual-spin equations analyzed by Krishnaprasad [1985] and Sanchez de Alvarez [1986]. We establish stabilization with a single rotor by using the energy-Casimir method. We also show how to realize the external torque feedback equations using internal torques. Finally, extending some work of Montgomery [1990], we derive a formula for the attitude drift for the rigid body-rotor system when it is perturbed away from a stable equilibrium and we indicate how to compensate for this

In this paper we analyze various control-theoretic aspects of a nonlinear control system possessing homoclinic or heteroclinic orbits. In particular, we show that for a certain class of nonlinear control system possessing homoclinic orbits, a control can be found such that the system exhibits arbitrarily long periods in a neighborhood of the homoclinic. We then apply these ideas to bursting phenomena in the near wall region of a turbulent boundary layer. Our analysis is based on a recently developed finite-dimensional model of this region due to Aubry, Holmes, Lumley, and Stone

In this paper we consider the control of two physical systems, the near wall region of a turbulent boundary layer and the rigid body, using techniques from the theory of nonlinear dynamical systems. Both these systems have saddle points linked by heteroclinic orbits. In the fluid system we show how the structure of the phase space can be used to keep the system near an (unstable) saddle. For the rigid body system we discuss passage along the orbit as a possible control manouver, and show how the Energy-Casimir method can be used to analyze stabilization of the system about the saddles
