Narrated by paleonanthropologist Tim White, this documentary surveys the far-reaching accomplishments of biologist and molecular biologist Allan Wilson. Featuring commentary from Wilson's coworkers at the University of California-Berkeley, his former graduate students, and his family members, Wilson's work is shown to have changed the face of anthropology and evolutionary biology. Collaborating with anthropologist Vince Sarich, Wilson developed a new theory of the relationship between time and genetic divergence, discovering a molecular clock in evolution. Challenging the use of fossils in determining humans' evolution from apes, Wilson and Sarich's theory measured divergence using molecular phylogenies and polymerase chain reaction technologies. While Wilson's work is widely celebrated today, White discusses the backlash that Wilson faced when challenging biologists to look towards molecular biology, and in challenging molecular biologists to broaden their scope

"Tropical rainforests are one of the oldest habitats on the face of our earth -- older than many of the stars. The first programme in the Wild Asia series is set in the tropics of Asia and explores a small area of rainforest in Northern Sumatra. This forest is the realm of our central character, Asia's largest ape, the orangutan, dubbed the "Red Ape" in honour of its orange-coloured coat. For the last five years an Indonesian/British research team have been studying a group of orangutans in this swampy area of rainforest. Their work is the basis of this film"--Container

"DNA testing has become a standard tool in genealogical research, but it takes more than saliva swabs and lab reports to truly understand one's ancestry. In this program, two young New Zealanders of Polynesian descent undergo DNA sampling, wrestle with the surprising results, and then embark on a journey of discovery, searching for their roots across the Pacific and into Asia. Their voyage ... traces in reverse the steps their ancestors would have taken thousands of years ago, passing through the Cook Islands, Samoa, Vanuatu, and ending eventually in Taiwan. For studying the overlap between genomic research and the cultural aspects of human migration, this is a moving and highly relevant odyssey"--Container

"All over northern Asia, over a few short weeks, freshwater has been locked up as snow and ice is released, filling the rivers to overflowing. As the floods recede, Ezo brown frogs spawn in the shallow pools left in the flood's wake. Their part in the survival chain is critical for in the spring, they will provide essential nutrition for fish owls and cranes. On the riverbank's frozen farmlands, Japanese Cranes forage amidst the stublle of the autumn harvest. And further north in Siberia, the world's most remarkable lake is about to begin its majestic thaw. Lake Baikai is around 400 miles long and up to a mile in depth.
