Judah Ben-Hur, the head of a wealthy Jewish family, is reduced to galley slave by the malevolence of his former friend, Messala, a Roman. Ben-Hur lives to avenge his family and is increasingly guided by a sense of destiny as his life intersects, at crucial moments, with that of Christ. Beset by production problems from the beginning, this was, in scale, a prototype for the Hollywood epic. Although containing impressive special effects and outstanding miniature work in its two great set pieces - the battle at sea and the chariot race - this production depended much more on 'live' staging on a grand scale than the 1959 re-make. The chariot race, one of cinema's great action sequences, was edited from 200,000 feet of film shot by more than 40 cameramen and directed by B. Reeves Eason. This is the 1930 re-issue version of Ben-Hur, reduced by between 10 to 15 minutes with a music and effects track added. The nativity scene was originally in two-strip technicolour
